Book Description

In her early thirties, Kasey Mathews had it all: a loving husband, a beautiful two-year-old son, and a second baby on the way. But what seemed a perfect life was shattered when she went into labor four months early, delivering her one-pound, eleven-ounce daughter, Andie.

The first time Kasey was wheeled into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), nothing prepared her for what she saw: a tiny, fragile baby in a tangle of tubes and wires. All at once, Kasey was confronted with a new and terrifying reality that would test the limits of love, family, and motherhood.

In this riveting, honest, and often humorous memoir, Preemie chronicles the journey of one tiny baby’s tenacious struggle to hold on to life and the mother who ultimately grew with her. From hospital waiting rooms to the offices of alternative practitioners, from ski slopes to Symphony Hall, Kasey tries to make meaning of her daughter’s birth and eventually comes to learn that gifts come in all sizes and all forms, and sometimes... right on time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Preemie is a must read! May 29, 2012
Format:Paperback
As the mom of two babies born preterm, I have read many books about prematurity -- but none have touched me so deeply as Preemie: Lessons in Love Life and Motherhood. I truly respect Kasey's willingness to share so honestly about the emotional trials of not only a NICU stay, but the years of parenting a medically fragile child. This book is a must read for parents of preemies, the professionals who care for this vulnerable population and the friends and family members of preemie parents who want to better understand the emotional, physical and psychological challenges of preterm birth. Hurray for Preemie!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic May 29, 2012
By Char
Format:Paperback
Preemie should be on everyone's summer reading list. Be ready to ride the reading rollercoaster of love, fear, uncertainty, humor and healing. You'll want to be in a NICU with a dark blanket over you so you too get to grow with Andie and Kasey and won't be disturbed while reading. Emotions you didn't know you had, you will feel - Why? Because this story is about a little girl, no not little...miniscule girl, who fought for her life and defied odds all while her mother was on a medical yoyo trying to nurture her baby to health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, touching, and funny too! June 1, 2012
Format:Paperback
Though "Preemie" seems to be, at first glance, targeted at mothers of premature babies, it spans a much grander audience, and its message is universal. It is about loving, losing, learning, laughing...and coming out whole on the other side. Kasey Mathews has a wonderfully clear and honest voice which will resonate to so many people, no matter their experience or background. READ THIS BOOK!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Journey May 31, 2012
By Harriet
Format:Paperback
This wonderful story is written with unabashed honesty. The story of this little girl's arrival and the entire family's journey is remarkably readable and engaging. Kasey Mathews tells a very personal story in a very approachable and forthright manner. Even if you don't have a child, never mind one born at 25 weeks and weighing 1 lb.11 oz., you will relate to this Mom's trials in getting her voice heard for her baby and her entire family. Once you pick up this book make sure you have enough time to read it through as you will not put it down!! A wonderful tale of love and victory!

This is an incredible book of wisdom, inner strength, love and belief that many times there is a plan which we may not easily see. Kasey lets us into her family and personal struggle of facing her greatest joy and fears all in one. This is such a great read for anyone, even if you do not have a preemie. I laughed and cried through each chapter. Buy it, read it and enjoy.. you won't be let down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw honesty and pure love May 31, 2012

There aren't enough stars for me to select!!! I need about 95 more!

In the last 36 hours I have devoured this exquisitely penned book, by author and preemie mom, Kasey Mathews. In the book, "Preemie: Lessons in Love, Life, & Motherhood", Kasey takes us through her journey as a preemie mom, wife, and woman complete with all the nitty gritty details so many of us try to hide. She is open and honest in a way that caught me off guard at times, yet offered so much comfort in knowing that I was not alone in some of my deepest fears as a mother of premature triplets born at 25 weeks. She does not hide behind a facade of having it all together; and when her life is turned on its head, she carries us along her path with eloquence and a sense of honesty that leapt off the page and nestled in my heart.

On Tuesday, I eagerly ripped opened the package Kasey sent me as I stood in my kitchen about to prepare dinner. My girls were in the living room at their usual post, seated at the coffee table with a stack of construction paper and an enormous box of crayons. I was mesmerized from the first page and didn't move for a good 15 minutes as I dove head first into Kasey's life. The detail with which she recalls such poignant moments in her life painted such a clear picture, I felt as if I was standing in the hospital room with her, or pushing her in her wheel chair to visit Andie (her 25 weeker daughter) for the first time. I could hear the scratching of the doctor's pen on her paper and all the beeps and bings of the machines in the NICU.

While Kasey's story is uniquely hers...it is not unique. Hundreds of thousands of parents go through the NICU experience every day in our country.
