Book Description

January 29, 2000
Preflight, 1 of 5 in The Pocket Primer Series, is written in an accessible, straightforward style. It is filled with information and ideas that can be immediately put to use and, as a series, will equip you with the tools and understanding you need to be both knowledgeable and highly productive in this new era.

This handy, up-to-the-minute, desk reference is a must have book for designers, pre-press operators, printers, desktop publishers, and all others who work with print communication.

Preflighting is not just a trend, it is a necessity. As we move into automated digital workflows, the need for proper file preparation becomes more and more important. Also, consider that we want to embed a job ticket that automatically directs files through multiple program functions. Those files must be right the first time. This is a deceptively simple book in that it covers all of the basics of understanding and preparing files for responsible printout. But simple is good—if you follow the common sense and pragmatic advice of Peter Muir. This book is also written the way Peter teaches. It is fun and meaningful, and always informative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, Highly Educational, February 24, 2000

This review is from: Preflight : Avoid costly printout problems through proper file preparation (Pocket Primer) (Paperback)
This book is an excellent overview of the various stages an electronic file goes through between design and print. It is not written so much as a "how-to" preflight book but rather as a "what to avoid and why" reference. Each chapter deals with a specific preflight issue, such as Vector and Bitmap Images, Fonts, PostScript, DPI, File Formats, Collecting the Pieces, etc. Anyone wishing to peer into the workflow of a prepress department will get a great education on WHY electronic files must conform to certain restrictions and what happens if they don't. Mr. Muir uses flowcharts and simple but clear illustrations to demonstrate his points. He also includes comprehensive preflight checklists, overviews of the various preflight software packages available today, and an introduction to PostScript errors and how to deal with them. His writing style is highly informational without being wordy. It would serve as an excellent reference book for both content creators and service providers, and would be highly educational for anyone even remotely involved in digital output. END
