A good book, but comes up short,
By Margaret (Northeastern USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Pregnancy Bed Rest Book: A Survival Guide for Expectant Mothers and Their Families (Paperback)
I have read every bed rest book I could find. This is not the best. The author has attempted to write a comprehensive book, and does a good job, just not great. There are better. It's very short, and after reading it, which took a couple of hours at most, I felt like I didn't have enough information. I wish the author would have had more experience with extended hospital bed rest. That would have been beneficial. **Recommended reading: "Days In Waiting: A Guide to Surviving Pregnancy Bedrest" by Mary Ann McCann, newer edition

I bought this book in preparation for my third bed rest. I have logged over 42 weeks of bed rest to bring my first two children to a safe date to be born. Each day I learned something new while on bed rest. After reading this book, I learned even more. The author's lists of resources following each chapter and in the back of the book are wonderful -- they open up a whole world to visit from bed. The parents' personal stories are supportive and inspirational. My friends were Also, I love that the author created a yahoo email list "bedrestbookbuddies" so that the readers of this book can get updated information as well as support from each other. This would make a great gift for a friend or family member on bedrest, but read it yourself first -- your understanding is the best gift you can give a mom on bedrest.

Lots of info in a warm, caring style,

I thought the author presented tons of information in a warm, friendly style. Her presentation wasn't scarey like the other books for expectant multiples! I liked that she shared her own experience along with many others. I related to several of the women. The quotes from experts and the latest studies were very interesting, especially about recovery. Now I'll be prepared when I get back on my feet! My only suggestion is that Ms. Tracy makes the next edition longer. I finished it in one day, and I have six weeks of bedrest left!

Informative and Empowering!,

Every year many pregnant women are forced to take to their beds in order to save the lives of their unborn children. The physical and emotional difficulty of bed rest is often underestimated by anyone who has not actually experienced it - including the professionals who prescribe it. In fact, many people think the idea of staying in bed sounds positively blissful; they fail to understand the enormous stresses and obstacles this predicament can place on a mother-to-be and her family. In her new book, The Pregnancy Bed Rest Book: A Survival Guide for Expectant Mothers and Their Families, author Amy E. Tracy presents the truth about lying in bed to await the birth of a child. The book -the first of its kind-grew out of Ms. Tracy's personal experiences as a mother waiting in bed for the arrival of her two children. Her book is filled with practical solutions to problems faced by those families who are forced to accept that a primary caregiver has suddenly become an invalid. Ms. Tracy has created a comprehensive list of valuable and diverse tips on surviving this difficult time. Her tone is positive, understanding, affirming, and supportive, and she empowers the reader with ideas such as how to tell her employer that she will be away from work. Her book carefully explains every consideration necessary to survive bed rest and reassures mothers and their families. Without becoming banal, Ms. Tracy shares vital explanations in mother-friendly language. Its format is easy to read, and its reassuring manner makes The Pregnancy Bed Rest Book the perfect bedside companion. It truly is the definitive survival guide for expectant mothers on bed rest and for their families, and should be included with every physician's prescription for bed rest. Very helpful!!,

I was already on bed rest for three weeks when my husband purchased this book for me. This book not only validates your feelings (i.e., Why me?), but can help any family members who read it to understand them as well. My other children are 12 and 14, and had taking care of Mom had become very old very fast, but after reading this book, they realized how I felt about having to rely on others so much, and more importantly, they realized they weren't taking care of Mom so much as taking care of the baby brother they both wanted so desperately! Their attitudes changed 100 percent! One of my favorite features of this book is that the author ends each chapter with a list of resources. Everything from books to websites to phone numbers for support groups is included. A most important feature of this book is that it clearly explains, often through stories shared by others who have been through this experience, WHY it is so important to do as the doctor suggested, and stay off your feet. She also includes a very handy checklist in the book to take to the doctor's office so the doctor can check off EXACTLY what you can and cannot do. I liked this feature because my doctor had told me to stay off my feet--but did that mean complete bed rest? Could I get up to fix meals? Could I go for outings in a wheelchair, etc? I still have almost eleven weeks of bed rest left to go, but it is somewhat more bearable thanks to this book. I have also ordered several of the other books reccommended by this author from the library. At least I will be using my 'horizontal time' constructively!

Indispensable - Absolutely Fantastic!,

This review is from: The Pregnancy Bed Rest Book: A Survival Guide for Expectant Mothers and Their Families (Paperback)
This is a *wonderful* book for any pregnant mother who is dealing with bed rest! The author is a veteran of two complicated pregnancies involving extended bed rest and she has put together an amazing amount of information and resources in this book. I wish I'd had this book for my first two pregnancies and am SO GLAD to have it for my third! The author includes a huge amount of information and practical suggestions for coping with bed rest. She gives great suggestions on how to get the help a bed rest mom will need and where to find the resources that might be available to help these mothers and their families. She also discusses in great detail both hospital bed rest and bed rest in the home. There is also a fantastic section on coping with bed rest when one already has other children [and how to help the children cope!], as well as a great section on fathers. I would recommend this book to any mother facing bed rest in her pregnancy - whether this is her first pregnancy or her fifth! This book is just overflowing with great information and is very encouraging and helpful. It is also a very easy and enjoyable book to read. It is very well written and worth every cent!

Short, brief, but has some good ideas,

This is good, and helpful, it's just short. I was on the bedrest much longer than this author, and her suggestions weren't as helpful as I hoped they would be. I will be buying the other bedrest books for more suggestions.

Ms. Tracy's book touches on all aspects of bed rest and how best to cope with them. She offers great suggestions for family members and friends of the bed resting mom too! I wish the book had been available when I was on bed rest during my high risk twin pregnancy. I highly recommend it to all moms on bed rest!

The Bedrest Bible,
By Carol Miller (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Pregnancy Bed Rest Book: A Survival Guide for Expectant Mothers and Their Families (Paperback)
Your search for a "Bedrest Bible" is over! The Pregnancy Bed Rest Book is chock-full of information, advice, resources, and personal stories from women who endured days, weeks, or months in bed. Amy E. Tracy, a bedrest veteran, answers every question you have--plus some you probably haven't even thought of yet--in a knowledgeable, friendly and easy-to-read style. My only complaint? I wish Ms. Tracy had written it in time for my own bedrest sentences!
