Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-Hales touches on topics such as, conception, fetal development, prenatal care, complications of pregnancy, birth, and newborn care. Each section is short and concise, covering basic information without going into depth on any particular subject. Readers looking for information on teen pregnancy will be disappointed by the four-page section, which consists mostly of depressing statistics. The only illustration of a teen pictures her visibly pregnant and lying despondently on a bed while all the adult women depicted appear joyful and peaceful as they exercise, give birth, and cuddle their newborns. Single parenthood, unmarried partners, gay parents, and adoption are not mentioned; the author assumes a woman and man experience each pregnancy as a couple. Confusingly, both the introduction and the foreword written by C. Everett Koop, former Surgeon General, and Sandra Thurman, Director of the National AIDS Policy, respectively, address general good health and have nothing specific to say on the topic. Readers will see these for the generic "expert" press releases that they are. Look to Jeanne Warren Lindsay's Your Pregnancy and Newborn Journey (Morning Glory, 1998) for a guide that covers these issues in a manner respectful to teens.
