Authoritative Answers to Hundreds of Questions,
This review is from: Pregnancy and Birth: Your Questions Answered (Textbook Binding)
As we know, doctors have become increasingly busy. You are lucky if you can get all your questions answered. To be well informed about pregnancy and birth, it does help to read as many books as possible on the subject.
The information presented here covers every stage of pregnancy from conception to childbirth. It also covers the baby's first six weeks. The advice is given by a team of two obstetricians and a midwife in a highly accessible format. Dr. Christoph Lees specializes in obstetrics, Dr. Karina has practiced in various teaching hospitals and is also a consultant. Grainne McCartan has worked as a community midwife. The book is organized into eight color-coded thematic sections for easy reference. Being pregnant today is far different than being pregnant 25 years ago. Today's mother prepares for pregnancy, takes prenatal care very seriously, understands how her baby is developing, is well-informed on changes in her body, knows how to stay fit and healthy, understands issues in pregnancy, is prepared for labor and birth and has all this information at her disposal in this handy reference. New mothers who did not plan their pregnancy will be happy to learn that the birth control pills they are taking will rapidly clear from their bodies and won't hurt the baby. What happens at a prenatal visit? Did you know that Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease passed on to humans by domestic cats? A good reason to make your husband change the litter box. I didn't realize that pregnant women should also wear gloves when doing yard work. You will enjoy reading about which herbal remedies are fine to take in pregnancy. Ginger can help the digestive system and prevent nausea. There are so many items in this book you will want to read about. It is better to be well prepared for all the items in this book. What happens if you have a breech birth? What are the stages of labor? What if I am having twins? How do I breastfeed? What happens if my baby must be in intensive care? How should I exercise before and after the birth. Can I have sex at all stages of my pregnancy? What happens in the first, second and third trimesters? What does my baby look like as he/she grows? Should I refuse an invasive test? How will my family adjust to a new baby? What is postpartum depression? Pregnancy and childbirth is uncharted territory for new mothers-to-be. With this book in hand, you will have the guidance you need to help you have a happy, healthy pregnancy and labor. ~The Rebecca Review

I originally bought this book as a back-up source of information, but it quickly took it place as my primary reference. I keep it on my nightstand and reread sections every night. I enjoy the format and find it very easy to look up information or just read through the section on my current stage. I was a little concerned that it was not published in the past year, but found that the information is up to date and accurate.

This book is used in my first trimester pregnancy classes. I looked at over 30 books to use in my classes. Hats off to Dorling Kindersley for a job well done!! The pages are bright and crisp. The pictures are laid out in just the right spots. The book covers pre-conception to Birth and beyond. It is a perfect first time mother's handbook. Enjoy!!

This was the first book I bought about pregnancy. I bought it on sale even before I found out I was expecting. The book is very well organized and very easy to read. It contains great explanation for every possible question you may have about your pregnancy. It is also very richly illustrated with photos, drawings and charts. I still keep it next to my bed and read it every now and then. I'd definitely recommend this book for my friends when they get pregnant.

A teriffic book! I enjoyed how this book was written, organized and presented to the reader. It is truly a must have if you are expecting or expecting to be expecting! I was impressed by the pictures/graphics and the chronicalling of a pregnancy. The information grouped by weeks and trimester easy to read and understand. Many of the questions I had were presented with easy to understand answers. Even my husband enjoyed this book--he read more of this book than any of the other pregnancy references I have brought home. We will definatiely be grabbing this book off the shelf as my pregnancy progresses!

I thought that this book was very well written. The question and answer format was easy to read and follow. Pregnancy, labour and birth can leave us with many question unanswered. I found that this book had a vast number of information and resources that were useful. I do in-home personal training with prenatal and postnatal women and I have applied to become a midwife. I feel after reading this book, I have a better understanding about what the journey of pregnancy is all about. This book covers topics about conception, health and fitness, premature babies, physiological changes, parental and maternity leave; as well as questions from a males perspective. This is just a short list of the topics covered. The section in the book where they provide useful addresses (resources)contain Canadian resources. This book is worth getting, don't hesistate. Excellent book, money well spent!

This book is awesome- it has tons of useful info and wonderful pictures! I wouldn't say it's the only book you'll need if you're as curious as I am, but it certainly covers the basics.

There are so many pregnancy books out there that it can be overwhelming, and many of them seem dominated by things to worry about or by political agendas on how you should birth/raise your child. I found this one by accident while on vacation, and have found that it gives you all the information you need to understand what's happening to your body and your baby's, distinguish what's normal from what needs medical attention, and feel prepared to bring your baby home. All with no fuss or lectures!
The book is divided into convenient sections, some of which you'll want to devour (nutrition advice, say, or descriptions of fetal development), others of which you'll want to read only as you get to the next set of changes and decisions (such as choices to be made about pain relief during delivery). The range of possibilities are discussed -- e.g., midwives and home birth versus full medical bells and whistles -- and lots of small remedies are suggested for common woes such as backache or nausea. There are also practical tips, like what clothes you'll want to bring to the hospital (for both mother and baby), which help with things you might forget. All in all, a great book, that I would recommend to any expecting family. |
