100 recipes to keep moms-to-be on the road to tasty, proper, prenatal nutrition

Pregnancy Cooking & Nutrition For Dummies helps moms-to-be eat tasty meals while maintaining nutritional balance. Going beyond most books on the shelf, you'll get not only 100 recipes and tips on how to supercharge family favorites (by making them even more healthy and nutritionally balanced) but also answers to such questions as: what is healthy weight gain; what meals help to overcome morning sickness; what are nutritionally sound snacks to satisfy cravings; what foods should be avoided to control heartburn and gas; and how to maintain nutritional balance with recommended amounts of the best vitamin, mineral, and organic supplements.

From seafood to eggs to unpasteurized cheeses, the list of foods pregnant women should avoid is not only long, but confusing. Pregnancy Cooking & Nutrition For Dummies gives you the lowdown on what to eat, what not to eat, and why. Additionally, it discusses how those with special diets (e.g. vegetarians, those with food allergies, etc.) can still follow good nutritional guidelines and address their unique nutritional needs — as well as those of their unborn child.

  • 100 recipes to get you started on the road to tasty, proper, prenatal nutrition
  • Helps you better understand and address the nutritional needs of yourself and your unborn child
  • Shows you how to create a stable and nutritious diet

Pregnancy Cooking & Nutrition For Dummies provides pregnant mothers with the resources and advice they need to create a stable and nutritious diet that addresses both their needs and those of their unborn child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Pre through Post Pregnancy Nutrition-EVER November 30, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I LOVE this book. I am sitting here shocked by all the valuable information this contains. I thought that I had read all that I needed to know about pregnancy nutrition based on plenty of sources I have previously sought out. However, this book has shown me that I was very wrong in that assumption. I discovered that I was often consuming things that are really hurting me and my unborn children.

Did you know that agave nectar is believed to stimulate contractions? I will spare you the details on why, but I REALLY NEEDED to know that. I also found out that it is a MYTH that sugar intake causes you to get diabetes (a huge relief)! I even appreciate learning how I can use my quinoa to make healthy bars to snack on.

This book should be given to every woman on this planet. It "walks" you through specific aspects of nutrition from pre-conception to post pregnancy (breast-feeding, formula issues, weight loss, exercise...) I was looking for up-to-date info. regarding specific herbs, common problem foods, meal plans, etc. I found this and a whole lot more.

This is comprehensive wisdom-so much info. contained in this book. I started to wonder if perhaps the title should have been more expansive to give it justice. At the same time, this is a fun, easy read.

I have already begun to make positive changes in my diet and in the way I shop and feed my family based on these recommendations. I have saved a lot of worry and money, because I now have confidence that I am making healthy, informed decisions.

Additionally, I found critical advice for mothers in the "special considerations" category (teen moms/cancer survivors/moms of multiples).

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book! January 28, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This book is awesome!!! It has tons of recipes and tips for staying healthy during pregnancy. I used it while I was pregnant, and there are so many good recipes in here! Now that I'm not pregnant anymore, I will still use this for the recipes! My copy is practically exploding with bookmarks. I'm vegetarian and most of the recipes are adaptable. Here are some of the recipes I thought sounded really good:

Quinoa nut mix
Crunchy garbanzo beans
Roasted beet and pistachio salad
Nana's moussaka
Spaghetti with clam sauce
Thai scallops with noodles
Garden fresh paella
Giant beans with spinach and feta
Sesame noodle salad
Baked ziti with tofu
Zucchini patties
Spanakopita
Sweet potato hash
Mixed berry frozen yogurt
Fudgy peppermint black bean brownies!!!!!!!!! *These are AWESOME*
Fruit cookie pizza

From the special 10-minutes-or-less section:
Three-bean artichoke salad
Havarti pear grilled cheese on pumpernickel
Grilled bananas

Again, this book is AWESOME. The first half is nutrition info, the second half is recipes, each with nutritional info listed. I checked out similar books when I was pregnant, but this was probably my favorite one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Expecting Mothers November 7, 2011
Format:Paperback
This book is a terrific resource for all new and seasoned moms who are pregnant. It provides great recipes and cooking tips to help busy, tired, pregnant women get food on the table without laboring over a hot stove. What makes this book extra special is that it's written by a mother of two boys, and a registered dietitian. Tara Gidus used her professional and personal experiences to put the book together in the DUMMIES format to make eating healthfully and deliciously less daunting. It also goes well beyond just recipes (though they all look great--full disclosure: I contributed one), and explains what to eat and what to avoid when at home or on the go; how much weight women should gain while pregnant; common symptoms (what they are and how to manage or avoid them); and so much more. The book is also a great resource for mothers after their babies are born--it can help them get back in shape and continue to eat healthfully and feed their families well.

I ordered several copies of this book from Amazon to give to pregnant friends and relatives, and only wish I had this resource when I was pregnant with my two sons 10 and 14 years ago! The book is a must have, and something you won't regret buying.
