3.0 out of 5 stars Last gasp of pre-grunge alternatives, October 17, 2010

This is not a CD to buy if you're a big Paul Westerberg fan (Lindeen's ex-Replacements husband, doing some back up vocals) or are expecting more of Zuzu's Petals (Lindeen's band in the 1980s). I can't even recommend it highly on its own, although it is enjoyable.

Lindeen made this EP while pregnant (the songs are divided by first and third trimester recordings), and what it shows is someone who used to be on the fringes of a rather wild scene (Minneapolis alternative music in the 80s) and who was a former cheerleader reflecting on truly becoming an adult. It's a damned interesting artifact if you're not simply looking for hard rocking music and holding on to your own youth.

I was trapped in Iowa for grad school when this came out, so I discovered it through an in-store muzak system in 2010. I bought the CD because of Lindeen's version of the Bee Gee's "Run To Me," which is the best song on the album and truly inspired. I wouldn't mind seeing another album of such covers from her. I don't find Lindeen's writing to be exceptional, either as a musician or in her current incarnation as a novelist. It's good writing but just better than adequate.

I bought this after reading her book "Petal Pusher" which traces the history of her band Zu Zu's Petals and her own life before and after. The songs are more sturdy than I expected, because, being an EP I was afraid it would be mere leftovers. I came away from listening with a sense that there will be more from Mrs. Westerberg in the future. Looking forward to that....

1.0 out of 5 stars If there is a hell, this music is what's playing, November 2, 2007

Mercifully, only a 6 track EP. Paul Westerberg lends much needed vocal support on the cover "Don't Go Out into the Rain" but it's a pitiful drop in the bucket, since Laurie Lindeen's voice is a form of water torture.

I see this item is priced at 1 penny, but if this item were free, you'd still get robbed, man.
