This review is from: Prehistoric Cultures in Eastern Pennsylvania (Anthropological Series (Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission)) (Hardcover)
Custer, a professor in the Anthropology Department at the University of Delaware, provides a detailed survey of the archeological record (with a focus on stone tools and ceramics) of Indian groups in eastern Pennsylvania up to the period of European contact, c. 1500 CE. As a bonus, he surveys the history of archeology itself in Pennsylvania, showing how state and amateur organizations have developed in the state over time. Some additional maps would have been useful in aiding the non-local reader to link the sites mentioned in the text with their geographical locations, but in general this is a thorough overview which draws extensively on the existing literature and research in the field.
