2.0 out of 5 stars very disappointed
Intronaut's album Null changed my life, or at least my views on the future of metal, because that album is incredibly space aged, and not in a gimmicky way, but in a "can't believe they just did that!" way.

But they reached for the sky too soon here on Prehistorisms. A very boringly plotted album with stifled songwriting.

Come again, fellas.

The Reptilian Brain is like a hallucenogenic drug in auditory form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intronaut Evolved, November 27, 2008
This review is from: Prehistoricisms (Audio CD)
Intronaut has returned with a much more focused and cerebral approach in this knock-out disc. While "Void" exhibited a whole lot of potential and some really great songs, it also exhibited weaknesses in direction with its chaotic songwriting/arrangements.

"Prehistorisims" is a largely cohesive collection of songs in which the progression is natural and impressive. As always, solid drumming abounds, rhythms are delightfully askew, and the guitars and vocals are aggressive.

With this disc, Intronaut has really bumped it up a notch or five.

Standout tracks include "Sundial," "The Literal Black Cloud," "Any Port," and the epic "The Reptilian Brain," the latter of which employs Indian influences replete with tabla and sitar, and builds quite naturally and hypnotically into something else altogether.

The maturity of this effort is really its success, and moves Intronaut into the upper echelon of progressive metal. I'm putting them right up there with Meshuggah, The Ocean, and Coprofago.

Four and a half stars (Amazon doesn't allow us to give "halves" apparently, so I erred in Intronaut's favor).

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, March 21, 2010

"Prehistoricisms" sees Intronaut further developing their sound. They are now more tight evidently more comfortable with each other when composing. The first example that comes to mind is the drumming on the track "Any Port", absolutely breathtaking. This is definitely an album worth buying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very heavy, very cool album, December 1, 2009
This review is from: Prehistoricisms (MP3 Download)
I'd rather rate this album a 4.5, but Amazon doesn't allow it. I don't listen to many metal bands these days, but Intronaut's flat-out amazing. The lyrics are indecipherable and the vocals don't add much, but as an instrumental combo, these guys smoke. This album's worth your time if only to hear bassist Joe Lester and drummer Danny Walker. They're a rhythm section on a par w/ Darin Gray and Blake Fleming of Dazzling Killmen.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite album of the year, October 30, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Prehistoricisms (Audio CD)
I have had Prehistoricisms at work all year, and it is pretty much the only thing I listen to there. I LOVE this band, and this is their best work so far - if you love complex heavy music do yourself a favor and buy it.

Its a bit less conventional than their other albums - a lot of the songs dissolve into complex spacey codas which you will be humming all day. The bass is up loud in the mix, and often plays absolutely bizarre countermelodies against the crunch of the guitars. Drumming is fantastic.

Favorite moment is the ending of the song Prehistoricisms, after a long journey tracking a lunatic time signature, in come some impressively subtle guitar growls and buzzing that sounds like nothing on earth (any more anyway) all played over the creepy prehistoric bassline, yet its still somehow reminiscent of the rest of the song, and also catchy.

Fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album., June 25, 2009
This review is from: Prehistoricisms (Audio CD)
I was a big fan of Intronaut when I first heard their Void album. Prehistoricisms is a great step in the evolution of the band. The songs are a little more technical, and more groove oriented. I wouldn't say it's less "metal", but the riffs might not be as "hard" as their previous work. The rhythm section dominates this album, as they should being that they're so talented. I think the song writing, lyrics, and direction of the album are improvements of past work. At first I wasn't sure about the album, but that's how I was with Void too. Then it grew on me (this one much faster than Void because I knew what to expect from Intronaut this time around.) For me the album highlights are Any Port and it's awesome drum solo at the end, and the Reptilian Brain because it really shows how the band has grown and the level of professionalism they put into their sound. I highly recommend this album for any fans of progressive metal (ie Mastodon, Messugah, Opeth, Isis, etc.).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, November 14, 2008
This review is from: Prehistoricisms (Audio CD)
Another great album from Intronaut. The Drums alone make it at least 3 stars and then you add everything else to it and you've got a 5 star album. This album is not as heavy as they're previous work, but MOST fans of Intronaut will enjoy this album. For fans of Mastodon, Isis, Neurosis, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Songwriting, April 3, 2009

This album makes me excited about modern rock. People keep calling this album extreme metal. While I don't want to argue, I fail to see what makes this extreme. The songs often have pretty riffs and never have overpowering, dirty vocals.
Intronaut is, for the most part, a really pleasant album. I melt every time the string bass pops in for a little grooving. It adds such a gorgeous, peaceful texture!
I wish sundial had been broken up into two songs, but both parts of it are worth listening to.

Not recommended for people looking for brutal, anger-driven music. Don't get me wrong: extreme music is awesome, but this album is not it. This is definitely more of a 'close your eyes and experience it' album.

funny how people that don't actually take in the album as a whole think that their opinion means something...oh heaven forbid there's less metallic riffs in this release...you dont have to have those kinds of riffs all the time to be a great band. REAL fans will appreciate this...posers (like the two losers that deemed my review unhelpful) will not.
