About the Author

As well as being a distinguished SF writer, Brian Aldiss is also an important mainstream novelist, poet, essayist, dramatist, artist of the abstract, SF historian and critic whose work has been published in dozens of countries around the world. Born in Dereham, Norfolk, England, in 1925, and educated in England, Aldiss served in the British Army from 1943-1947, in England, India, Assam, Burma, Sumatra, Singapore, and Hong Kong; these experiences later provided material for a number of succesful books and stories. He worked as a bookseller for 9 years and sold his first professional stories in 1954. His first book, The Brightfount Diaries, was published in 1955, and he became a full-time writer in 1956. The first of many science fiction books, the short story collection Space, Time, and Nathaniel, was published in 1957. Among his many awards are the Hugo Best Short Story, Nebula Best Novella, John W. Campbell, several British Science Fiction Awards, Prix Jules Verne (Sweden), Cometa d'Argento (Italy), Hugo and Nebula Best Non-Fiction Awards, J. Lloyd Eaton Memorial Award, and numerous nominations. He has twice received Special Citation as "Britain's Most Popular Science Fiction Author" from the British Science Fiction Association, as well as the Ditmar Award (Australia), World's Best Contemporary Science Fiction Writer, the James Blish Award for Excellence in Criticism, the Pilgrim Award for lifetime contributions to the study of science fiction (Science Fiction Research Association), the Distinguished Scholarship Award (International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts). He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1989 and Grand Master by Science Fiction Writers of America in 2000. His OBE (Order of the British Empire) was presented by the Prince of Wales in 2005.
