About the Author

Mark A. Mathis (1953-2005) was an archaeologist with the North Carolina Office of Archaeology (1977-2005). He earned degrees in anthropology from Oklahoma State University and the University of Arkansas.

Jeffrey J. Crow is deputy director of the North Carolina Office of Archives and History. He earned a Ph.D. from Duke University. Dr. Crow is the author/editor of more than ten books on various topics in North Carolina history.
