Decalogue Soundtrack,
By Austin Mama (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Preisner: Kieslowski Krzysztof (Audio CD)
This CD evokes the mood of the Decalogue. Preisner is original and dramatic. The music is like nothing else in classical music. He and Kieslowski were perfect collaborators. The Decalogue would not be the same without his music.

Some rich gems,
By Sentinel (Essex) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Preisner: Kieslowski Krzysztof (Audio CD)
This is an anthology of some of the film music Preisner composed for Kieslowski's films, principally the 'Three colours Trilogy (Blue, White, Red), and the hauntingly enigmatic 'The Double Life of Veronique'. These were superb examples of European cinema, and Kieslowski died tragically young ('Requiem for my friend', Preisner's tribute to him, is well worth investigating, and a more complete and integrated body of work than this collection, obviously). Music is a very central element to these films, and some of these pieces, isolated from the film score, still are very impressive, with a wistful, haunted quality, and also influences of small 18th C. chamber orchestra. The excerpts from 'Red', and some of the 'Dekalog' and 'Double Life' selections are perhaps the most immediately appealing, but given the fragmented nature of the selection, it's probably more effective to 'sample' rather than attempt to listen to this as a whole. Worth exploring, though the 'Requiem' is the more satisfying journey.

If you first encountered Zbigniew Preisner's music through the soundtracks of Kieslowski's films,as I did,you were probably enthralled by the transcendent dimension provided by the music. Without embarking on an expensive search for the Decalogue, the Three Colours trilogy and La Double Vie de Veronique, here,on one beautiful CD,are the highlights.Recorded for the most part in Warsaw, the quality of the sound is excellent. A boon is the addition of a track from Requiem for my Friend, and the brief but intelligent notes in French.
