Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is the book. Get it. Read it. Ponder it. I began a bit skeptically. Chapter 1 scared me. Is this just another 'bleeding heart' liberation theology analysis of race? How wrong I was. Thank you, A. Charles Ware, for challenging my thinking and behavior. Thank you for making me uncomfortable." (Gary L. Welton Journal of Psychology and Christianity )

From the Back Cover

Racial diversity within Christian unity—a biblical imperative long avoided and under-addressed in the church. In a culture measured by its pluralism, the church has convinced itself that racial division is not a pressing issue. Yet Dr. Charles Ware reminds us that the most segregated hour is 11 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Unconsciously held attitudes and presuppositions continue to divide the very Body of Christ.

In this insightful guide to dealing with prejudice in the church, Dr. Ware shares his own experience and his expertise in the area of racial reconciliation as a black educator and church leader in the United States today. He traces the history of the misunderstandings behind racism, examines the biblical model for reconciliation, describes the role of love in the church and community, and explores the answers to such questions as:

  • Don’t people of different races prefer to be with “their own”?
  • Can people from different backgrounds really worship together?
  • How do you assimilate several races and cultures into a cohesive congregation?
  • What does Scripture say about the origins and unity of different races?
  • What about interracial marriage?

Jesus prayed for and commanded that unity be the distinguishing mark of the church—this book offers practical ways and a challenge to take this directive seriously.

A. Charles Ware is president of Crossroads Bible College of Indianapolis, Indiana. The cofounder of the Voice of Biblical Reconciliation, Dr. Ware speaks about racial reconciliation in churches, schools, colleges, seminaries, conferences, camps, prisons, and at civic functions around the world. He and his wife, Sharon, have six children.
