5.0 out of 5 stars Enticing March 13, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition
This prelude to the complete novel 'Casting Stones' is definitely a drawing point. You're pulled into the lives of the characters from the very first page. I was really upset when it drew to a close. Couldn't wait to dig into the full novel just to see what would happen next. This is a great short read and a must read before the complete book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Beginning to the Rest of the Story February 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The description is what pulled me into reading this prelude, and it hooked me in enough to read the next book Casting Stones. In this story, we're introduced to James Raven and Esther. Her father sent her over to William (James' father) and James' home to cook and clean. Esther's father is sure that James will one day be her husband, and Esther is sure of this, too. But will James follow the path set out for him or choose his own way?

Like I said, this story pulled me in. The characters felt real to me, which I know is hard to explain except to say I experienced the emotions they felt. That's what I liked most about this book and the next. I connected to them and understood their motivation for doing what they did. Let's suffice it to say that no one is perfect, but you can understand why they chose the path they did. Very well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars intriguing....can't wait for the novel! January 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The story prelude is highly intriguing - leaves the reader wanting to delve into the depths of each character's soul. I am dying to read the novel in its entirety, to see the characters develop as the story unfolds!

4.0 out of 5 stars You Can't Always Get What You Want... April 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Short intro to the book by the same name.William's wife/James' mother dies. James has someone in mind to court. Esther has someone in mind to court her. Things don't always turn out like we want.

More About the Author

Gina M. Barlean is a Nebraska author who writes mystery and suspense with a Midwestern voice, and characters who could be anyone the reader might know--a co-worker, an aunt, a neighbor, or even themselves.

Small rural towns and Midwestern perspectives are something Barlean knows well. It takes a curious mind and good imagination to stay entertained in a one-stop-light town. However, don't be fooled. Interesting things can happen anywhere, especially in Barlean's books. Be assured, all is good in the simple lives of Barlean and her family...but in her books? Not so much. Conflict is alive and well in the novels Barlean writes.

Barlean has been a professional photographer, managed her small town's Opera House, and worked with entrepreneurs as the director of her town's Chamber of Commerce.

Now Barlean enjoys a large yard to mow out in the country, a little army sergeant of a Schnauzer, and a couple of shedding cats. She's gone to culinary school, where she discovered opening a restaurant was not her life dream, after all, but continues to enjoy cooking and entertaining her family and friends. Her husband tolerates all of her changing moods and adventures like the good soul he is. Barlean's children are grown and very busy with their own lives--Mamma is very proud.
