I read an ARC of the aptly named "Prelude to Darkness" and loved it. At the time, I hadn't quite finished WASTELAND, the book that this short story preludes, but I had no problem at all keeping up.

This is a tragic love story about Margaret. Her desire to free herself from a life of slavery and her attraction to a man she can't have make her ripe for the picking by the forces of darkness. Greed drives her to make a shocking choice, yet the reader can still empathize with her despite it all.

My favorite character is Harold. I won't spoil anything, but he has such a kind, good heart. To me, he's the real hero of the story.

If you've read WASTELAND, you MUST read this story. Lots of details from a certain character's past get filled in, and you'll look at the backstory from WASTELAND in a new light. Everything you thought was pretty black and white from WASTELAND is now nothing but gray. :-) Congrats to Lynn Rush for shaking up all my preconceived ideas and showing me a completely different perspective I never saw coming.

A gripping tale! I was taken in by Margaret and her plight and her desire for something more. But beware what you wish for! Ms. Rush has created a dark fairy tale with interesting characters who are not always what they seem to be. This is a prelude to Ms. Rush's first novel, Wasteland, which I haven't read yet but I'm definitely putting it on my TBR list.

I was immediately hooked by Prelude to Darkness; the writing was so compelling. This author's voice is distinctive, and the description lovely. With this story's fairy tale feel and eerie Gothic feel, it left me breathless for more!

Driven to write, Lynn Rush often sees her characters by closing her eyes watching their story unfold in her mind. Lynn Rush is a pen name that is a combination of two sources - Lynn, the first name of her mother-in-law, who passed away and Rush - since the author is a former inline speed skater and mountain biker. All of Rush's books are dedicated to Lynn, her namesake.

Rush holds a degree in psychology from Southwest Minnesota State University and a master's degree from the University of Iowa. Originally from Minneapolis, Rush currently enjoys living in the Arizona sunshine by road biking nearly 100 miles per week with her husband of 16 years and jogging with her two loveable Shetland Sheep dogs.
