4.0 out of 5 stars Neat pieces December 15, 2000
Format:Audio CD
A good CD. The 6 Gershwin songs were arranged by the performer, and although they are superb, they aren't as sweet-sounding as I'd like them to be. They're just a little severe. (I prefer the eccentric to an extreme but exquisite Mario Ratko-Delorko recording) The Preludes are great pieces, and the interpretation is good. The interesting Children's Songs seem somewhat harsh and plain, but that's the way they were written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb August 10, 2009

This is a very satisfying album. If you are a Gershwin fan, you will likely love Mr. Bate's spunk. The Corea Children's Songs are a gem, and I thank Mr. Bates for bringing them to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazzy Gershwin and Serious Corea November 21, 2010
By Dmitri
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I don't know what to say about this great piano CD I am so ignorant about the music. Leon Bates seems to know what he is doing. The Gershwin is really engaging and some of the tunes even though I am almost too young to know them do recognize them and he does a great job with playing the piano transciptions of the songs. The preludes at the beginning are a bonus.

But the real main course here is the Chick Corea Children Songs which put some classical music to shame I am afraid to say being a classical music fan that I am. My next logical step is to get Corea himself doing these miniatures I suppose. My budget was tight and this Naxos price was right. So I went for this CD.

If you have any interest in Weill, Gershwin, or Krenek which I do then I suggest this CD highly. The Corea is one of the greatest cycle of piano miniatures in the 20th century!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! December 19, 2013

I saw Leon in concert with the Atlanta Symphony and he brilliantly imparted his own unique style to this time worn American genre of Gershwin's classical genius. Being familiar with Gershwin, I'd never heard anyone outside Earl Wild who played Gershwin with such authenticity, if we are to embrace Wild's storied past. Wild was old enough to have heard Gershwin in person and stayed loyal to the music's original intent.

Bates peppered his performance with verve, passion and moxie that took me back to the composer's blueprint. Bates resisted the urge to "over-symphonize" the music, something I heard from Bernstein and was put off by the pace of that arrangement of Gershwin. Bates instead, chose to enlighten the audience with a refreshing performance altering the pace with a litany of andante, allegro and sprinkled with accentato. I could go one but suffice to say, i'm not a music critic. I just know what makes my heart sing. It's an uncommon interpretation and one that caught me by surprise. But reflecting on it later, it might be how I would imagine Gershwin himself banging on the keyboard in Tin Pan Alley.

Upon leaving the show, I purchased this CD and realized it has a special rendition of Corea's "Children's songs." I'd heard it prior by another pianist and I do like the collection. The recording itself was lush, the piano had a specific decay making for a wide soundstage with Bates revealing the passion of the composer. Great recording! I am hooked on Bates' recording through and through.

I play this CD in my truck regularly and carefully burned to iPod via WAV file - the only way to do it.

Bought this CD to help my son with his learning these pieces of music. This Leon Bates recording has become our new favorite. His performance of this music is thoughtful, nuanced and a great addition to our music library.
