2nd album - and a new 'style',

This review is from: Premeditated Murder (Audio CD)
James Cavalluzzo doesn't like to do the same thing twice.
Each Malhavoc CD is different. The Release is speed metal; This album is slowed down a bit; Get Down was more like early NIN and the Lazarus Complex is Electronica. But James Cavalluzzo doesn't sound like anyone else. There are 2 versions of Premed Murder. One with an 'opening' theme and one without. "Theme" borrowed a sample from the rap track "it takes two". Why? I have no idea. For weeks I skipped over Premed Murder's track 1 and didn't even realize that half-way through it changes into a cool metal track. HA! Then comes "Languish". This song is an all time favorite now for 11 years (I first heard this CD in 1994.) JC's vocal style on this track is a bit like King Diamond. That raspy/wispery style almost buried in the mix. YOU CAN understand the lyrics if you follow along with the lyric book (and headphones help too). If not just enjoy the cool guitar hook Languish has. It's hypnotic and one you'll play over and over. I know I do. I usually skip the next track 'solitude' just because it's a bit too slow. However, Crusade, Conspiracy, The L.O.C. (loss of control; Kill (Dislocated)and Extro are all amazing tracks to follow. They got great hooks and catchy rhythms. These are not average metal tunes. Still this IS hard and heavy metal--It's not The Knack. Sadly, Tracks 10-13 are early Malhavoc tunes [1985] so they are more like the speed metal of "The Release". Not bad but not the same as the first half of the disc. The disc closes with a remix of The L.O.C. This is great metal from Canada. I found it through a friend and have passed it on too many others. Look for it on eBay or buy it used here on amazon. I will state this: "Languish" is one of the best heavy metal songs of the last 25 years. |
