Great chess set! (for adults),

This has been an excellent chess set! I would not, however, recommend it for children as that the glass is very noisy when hit hard with the pieces, and I have a suspicious that it could break or be dangerous because of its weight. I bought the set for my girlfriend--who loves it--and am happy I choose this one (even though it was more expensive) over one of the wooden or plastic sets. It has a very nice feel to it and is fun to play. The weight of the board and the pieces gives it a certain permanence and importance. The chess set is very pretty, elegant and usable; though, it is certainly not an "expensive" chess set. That is, there are noticable seams on the clear glass pieces--the board, however, is very heavy. I feel it is worth the price and have enjoyed it immensly. I recommend it.

Not sure why everyone is talking about "loud and noisy" and "when the pieces fall over" - these are good weight pieces - not too heavy not too light. Why are you all knocking them over? Are you drunk while playing? This set is a steal - it IS real glass, and the pieces all have felt on the bottom so when you move them they glide easily. They also are decent sized - the board is not 8"x8" but more like 16" x 16". Great size. You can move it anywhere because the felt keeps pieces in place, thus if you want to continue a game later you don't have to deal with the folding board messing it up. It's also not too heavy of a board - the glass board itself can be picked up with one hand. Whoever is requesting the pieces be larger must be talking about a different set because even the pawns are almost 2" tall. Not sure what the problem is? For anyone to say this is overpriced is completely rediculous - I am a professional designer and I find this set to be not only beautiful and well-crafted, but an absolute BARGAIN for the price. I'd drive to [a local store] and pick it up if you are that worried about additional shipping cost. They sell it for [$$$] also. The best part about it is the packaging set up that comes with it - great for travel even though it's a glass set. We bring it everywhere.

My main complaint about this set would be that the clear chess pieces have a very noticable line around them where the glass was pressed into a mold. I rated it low on the "toy" scale because it is not a toy and should not be bought for children. The "board" is a large piece of thin glass that I would not want children playing with.If you want to buy this for someone who likes to play chess on occassion I think it is a decent choice. I would not buy it for someone who plays regularly because a big heavy, fragile glass set is just not convenient....I think that [the price] is probably too much for this item. [But] If you can get free shipping on this set it is a good value.

Chess is one of those rare games that you can play thousands of times over and never have the same game twice!! It's a game that is well over a thousand years old, but is as much fun now as it was 200 or 400 years ago.Chess sets are usually wooden or plastic, and generally, if you've seen one, you've seen them all-- most folk don't openly display their plastic pieces on the board at all times as a decoration. Fancier pieces, carved in the shapes of warring armies, for example, are usually profoundly expensive. This glass chess set combines function and form in an aesthetically beautiful set of clear and frosted glass on a standard 8x8 chessboard. While buyers should note that the pieces are NOT competition Stauntion size, they are quite beautiful and perfectly functional at a verrrry reasonable price (I've seen boards like this in gaming stores selling for $100 and over!). To the best of my knowledge, neither the board nor the pieces are made of tempered or safety glass, so if the board breaks, it will likely be into sharp, jagged pieces. However, glass is actually much more resilient than it looks, and as long as you're not overtly mishandling the board or pieces, you shouldn't have to worry about breakage. It's a beautiful set for the beginner or grandmaster (though obviously best left out of the reach of small children!), and you certainly can't beat the price!! Highly recommended for those looking for a good-looking, displayable board that is more eye-catching than your standard wooden or plastic pieces.

This chess set is an amazing familey tresure. I know I will be able to pass this down to my family for years. It even says that if you lose or break a pice the company will replace it! What more could you ask for?

As a chess set collector, I think this set is definitely worth the money. It is exactly as described, well made and very beautiful, especially the board, and arrived carefully packed in styrofoam inserts, so nothing would break. I would classify it as a game, not a toy, however, since it is made of glass.

...and after I received it I still can't believe it. If you want a classy place to play chess without spending a fortune, this is the set. We love it. It is glass and is breakable, so you don't want to leave it laying around. However at this price you could afford to buy another.

I love the feel and look to the board..It takes a while to recognize the coloring of the glass board, but otherwise it's very cool...A great gift item that's good for show and play, and even though the board itself is a bit heavy, it shouldn't be a problem if you know how to handle it and be careful that you're messing with glass here!!.. Oh, and it's not as small as it appears in the pic.. ;)

My friend called this the glacier chess set because of its appearance, and she does have a point, when you pick up a piece it is like picking up a piece of ice but I like that and so does she.
I am of the opinion however that this particular set would be one you'd buy for a teenager or an adult rather than a child who might not appreciate its aesthetic appeal. The set is made of a combination of smoky and clear glass and though it is quite sturdy, it is definitely not a toy in any sense of the word. I especially like the fact the opaque/crystalline pieces and their board can be kept nice and shiny and only with a bit of elbow grease and a clean dry cloth. It's not a light set, the glass board and pieces are quite solid but they are smooth and easy to move, however don't push them across the board, lift them and put them on the square you are moving the chess piece too. If you push the piece across the board it makes an awful scraping noise, not to mention it discolours/scratches the glass board after a while. This is what I would call a play and display set, you don't really buy it to play with it every day but it is a real chess set so it can be played, but it is also a wonderful ornament too, so it has a dual purpose. It's also very good value for the price and it looks good too so you can't go far wrong with that, can you! For a point of information the reason I gave this chess set only three stars for durability is that some people don't seem to realise that glass can break/shatter if handled too roughly. You'd be surprised at how many people don't treat glass with the respect it deserves. All the same, this is a lovely chess set that has to be seen and used to be appreciated.

Played chess with this set several times and have enjoyed it. Just a little bit stressful when you are reaching for a chess piece and topple another glass piece over onto the board with a loud clatter. Haven't broken the board though and I've had it for 4 years.
