I completely disagree with the first review. I have one of these and love it. My dog was out of control on walks, pulling and weaving all over the place. It made walking him truly exhausting. After working with him on the gentle leader, he is under control and our walks are much more enjoyable.
The first review complained that the product is unnatural. Well, so is a collar, but we all use those. The dog just has to get used to it. Once they do (took my dog about 4-5 walks), they stop pulling and....get this...walk with you! It works by hooking the leash under their snout instead of on the collar. That way, when they try to pull, they pull their whole head sideways. The fact that my walks are no longer a mobile wrestling match make me walk my dog MORE OFTEN which is better for the both of us.

I am an owner of a Pit-bull/Boxer mix dog named Patch that I adopted from animal control. I have never had a dog from that breed before but I have had other kinds of dogs (Labrador, jack Russell terrier, Retriever). Even though I love him dearly, he is a handful. Before Gentle Leader, animal control had Patch on a pronged choke chain and he would pull for the life of him, almost to the point where he was about to collapse his wind pipe.

Patch is a very gentle, loving dog when at home is very well behaved and trained, but is very large and has a very mean sounding bark. Walking him was so difficult because he would try to jump, pull me and bark at everything and everyone passing by. I tried everything; every training device, video, and collar. It was to the point I just wanted to give up walks altogether. I really was at my wit's end.

Then I tried this product. Patch is a totally different dog when we walk now. He no longer attempts to jump on anything, he no longer barks and most importantly he stays close to me. Today three runners passed us today and he didn't even bat an eye.

He doesn't mind putting the gentle leader on or wearing it and does not attempt to remove it. At first he had a hard time adjusting to it and tried to "paw" it off, this was in-fact MY error because I didn't follow the instructions, so please - FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! Watch the video, read the pamphlet. Once I fixed the problem Patch loved wearing the collar.

I am no longer embarrassed when we walk. I have had this device now for over three weeks now and I wished I had it sooner, that's why I gave it five stars.

My husband and I have 2 large dogs (chocolate lab & boxer/lab mix) and they each have their own gentle leader. We use them anytime we leave the house. If you buy the correct size and adjust it properly it will quickly become just part of life for your dog. Whenever we pick up the gentle leaders, our dogs get excited with happiness and then sit very still so we can put it on them. We have a connector leash so one of us can walk both 80+lbs dogs at once. Without the gentle leaders, this task is almost impossible.

For anyone who is afraid this is akin to a muzzle, this is not. They can open their mouths and do just about everything they want to, except pull. It does take a couple of days/weeks for your dog to accept it, but that is because they love to pull and be in command.

Our trainer recommended it to us and every class she has. She loves dogs almost as much as my friend who is a Vet and she recommends the gentle leader as well.

I've tried everything from standard choke chains, prong collars, body harnesses and other more gimmicky collars in an attempt to get my Boxer to stop pulling so excessively when we walk. I can certainly tolerate the occasional pull due to a squirrel or a rabbit, but my dog pulls constantly. So hard, in fact, that she is left gasping for air. With a body harness, she throws up after the walk because of the pressure on her stomach.

The Gentle Leader head harness is the only thing that she responds to. Another reviewer here calls this harness cruel and acts like it's meant to stop dogs from turning their heads and looking around. In reality, my dog is able to turn her head in any direction she likes, because most of the time there is no external pressure on the harness. A little tug when she walks ahead is all that's required to remind her to stay by my side.

She does paw at the harness for ten - fifteen seconds a few times per walk, but then it's over and she gets back to walking like nothing ever happened. This very minor and short-term discomfort is much less traumatic than her self-inflicted choking/throwing up from other collars.

I can't say enough good things about this collar. Not only is it not cruel, it is the first collar I've ever found that protects my dog from the pain she inflicts on herself during a walk.

I have three hounds - Large active dogs that need lots of exercise. Combined they outweigh me by about 100 lbs. They all wear a gentle leader at all times. If I can detour my hounds from dragging me down the trail of every scent they find, this product will work for any dog. No other collar would prevent my dogs from dragging me. With 3 properly fit gentle leaders I can walk all three of my dogs at the same time. No one gets hurt, including me!!! Our daily walks are great for them - better behavior all around and a great exercise regimen for me. My older dogs have been waering theirs for nearly 6 years. When my friends and family join us for walks my older dogs poke their nose right through the loop. They know exactly how their collars work and never, ever paw at them. My younger bloodhound has adjusted to his completely in just a few months. Since I placed a Gentle Leader on him as a puppy, he adjusted quickly and was easier to train than my older dogs. No product I have tried has changed the relationship I have with my dog more!! The 1 star review has apparently never had a difficult or over-active dog. Don't give up on your dog - just get a new collar.

We have a black lab that is approximately 9 months old. He is incredibly strong. We tried several techniques to stop the pulling but nothing worked. Even with a regular collar, he would choke himself. My wife was getting to the point where she could no longer walk him. In two walks, Buddy was under control. At first, he pawed at it and tried to get it off. But, he became accustomed to it and it worked great. I highly recommend it.

I purchased this collar 4 days ago and now I walk my 96 pound lab rather than him walking me. I would highly recommend this collar. Make sure you watch the DVD to get the right fit. Fitting the dog took about 15 minutes and then we worked another 15 minutes with training. He tried to fight it at first, but with gentle prodding and treats he settled right down. As of today when he knew we were going for our daily walk he even sat at my feet waiting for his "go for a walk" collar. I was truly amazed. No more pulling, just a comfortable walk for both of us. Do not hesitate to purchased this collar. Your dog will love you for it!

The Gentle Leader worked for me on the first try. I have a very strong Border Collie mix that loved to take me for a walk and was aggresive. My mother suggested this and at first thought "not another wonder product to get my dog to walk normally". I had tried the Halti, prong collar and muzzle. They never worked and I had given up. I went to look at what the Gentle Leader was and realized it wasn't like anything I tried before. The first time I put it on, it worked perfectly. All of a sudden my pup is walking with me and not dragging me. He did try to paw it off at first but nothing like the other devices I have used. He is now getting used to it and we are all happier. He used to tug so much that he would start wheezing and no longer does that. I am actually thinking of getting the petite one for my little dog because I feel that it wouldn't hurt her neck.

I just adopted a 3 1/2 year old Golden Retriever from a shelter - she is almost 80 pounds, and very strong. She was quite calm at home but became very excited at certain points of our daily walks - it took so much work maintain some semblence of control. After one week of strong pulling, we tried the gentle collar, and the difference was incredible. Suddenly our dog was walking side by side and not pulling - walks are so much more relaxing now I can not recommend this product any more highly!

I have a bullmastiff and she was very difficult to walk because she pulled so much. I tried the Gentle Leader and it worked wonders from the very first walk. She learned very quickly not to pull and our walks are so much more enjoyable. I am in complete control. Now I have a great dane puppy and I'm getting one for her also.
