2.0 out of 5 stars good theory, just way too much of a break away
I bought 4 of these collars (2 for each of my dogs), after a local tragedy where a 1 year old dog died because his collar got stuck on a branch when he went for a swim and he drowned. Well, it works. But, it works too good. I take my dogs to the woods where they run off leash and play with other dogs. If they are out of my site (in the wooded area) and start wrestling...

I am one of the "one in a million" owners that knows first hand the utter heartbreak and devastation that comes from losing a cherished dog to a collar accident. My 15 month old Rottweiler (75lbs) was strangled to death by her rolled leather collar (not a choke) while playing outside with another dog. The other dog's tooth got caught in the buckle and he strangled her in his twisting attempt to get free. She was much bigger and stronger, but it didn't matter. It was fast and too quiet to alert someone in the home to what was happening.

We now have a new puppy and this is the only collar she wears around the house. It is true that it does come free on occasion, but that typically means that she was stuck on something and pulled hard enough to break apart the clasp. The clasp is easily reassembled and there is no damage to the collar. If there are times where you do not want the collar to separate with pressure, all you need to do is link both D-rings together, like with the buckle of a leash when you go for a walk. I suppose you could do this with a carabiner or something for other circumstances where you don't want the collar to separate, but that would probably defeat the purpose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, safe collar, June 30, 2008

All dogs should have safety / break-away collars. We bought these collars for our dogs who like to wrestle after one dog's jaw got caught in the collar of our other dog, hurting his jaw and choking the other dog to the point where we nearly lost him. I didn't think we needed to worry about collar safety because we are almost always with our dogs and often remove the collars when we leave them home alone. This collar does what it is supposed to do and will snap if pulled on too strongly. You can easily snap it back together and put it back on your dog. Be sure to use both d-rings if you attach a leash to the collar and your dog is a puller, as he may pull hard enough to break out of the collar. We use harnesses to walk our dogs and twice now I haven't been paying attention to what I clip the leash to and he has pulled so hard that he broke out of the collar. Lesson learned and I now always look at where I'm hooking it up (to the harness rather than the collar, but if you use both rings you can safely attach it to the collar).

If they are out of my site (in the wooded area) and start wrestling they come back with out the collar. Any play biting that has paws or jaws in contact with the collar allows the safety latch to open. I have found the collars a few times and reused them. Locally it's no big deal my dogs are very good with voice command and know where they are. I wanted to be able to use them when we camped, but, won't now because if they lose them, they also lose their ids.

It was a nice idea. I just wish maybe there was a way that they wouldn't release so easily. A few times when my dog was running and leaping for a ball it has come off as well. It just takes a minor twist with some pressure from the neck and it comes undone.

Again the theory is nice and I hope it does save some pets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for small dogs, May 3, 2010

We ordered three size small collars and they fit our fairly regular sized pug and our two larger than average pugs.
The complaints that these break away too easily have not been true with our dogs, though I could see it being true with larger dogs.

The ability to still attach a lead to this collar by using both rings is great- we usually walk our dogs on a harness, but being able to use the collar for a short walk is really helpful. The rings seem just a bit far apart or a bit too small for how far apart they are- one of our smaller leads has a small clasp that doesn't reach between them easily.

The only real downside is that sometimes the brass rings will weigh it down so they slide around to the front but that probably wouldn't happen if we had heavier id tags than we do, and it really isn't a big deal- there's no harm in having the break away point in front and it can easily be turned back around.

Overall, I'd say 4.5 stars- these are nearly perfect for small to medium dogs.

5.0 out of 5 stars dog lover, July 7, 2010
Given the number of strangulations of dogs due to collars, these breakaways should be standard issue thoughout America-They should be promoted by every vet in the US and should be available for purchase at every pet store from coast to coast.
This is an excellent product. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works just as intended, June 30, 2010

I have these on both my dogs, and although they play rough and wrestle a lot, the collars have only come off as intended - when the dogs were seriously in danger of being caught. They have caught the collars on fences and on each other, and every time it pops off I know they might have been hung up on something. In one case my dog got caught in the middle of a scuffle between two other, bigger dogs at the park, and the big dog grabbed his neck, and my dog wriggled out and the other dog was left just holding the collar! If it had been a regular collar he might not have gotten out of the situation so easily. I'm so happy with them that these are the only collars I will use from now on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks to who invented this collar!, June 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Our two dogs were playing and one regular collar got caught around one dog's mouth while still attached to our other dog. After a few tense minutes, we were finally able to unhook one collar and all was well. A few more minutes could have brought disaster to both dogs. This was a freak accident but it happened. After that incident, I researched collars as I always had break away collars for my cats but never saw them for dogs. I was amazed when I read the stories of how many pets have strangled due to their collars.
All three of our dogs are now wearing these. I do not like to leave them without a collar and ID even though they are micro-chipped and do not leave our fenced in yard. Now I can feel safe knowing they are wearing collars that will not stay caught on anything.
I have told every dog owner I know about this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential, but needs work-around to not get lost, June 4, 2011

I bought two of these collars the day after my 8 month old puppy's jaw got caught in my adult dog's collar while they were wrestling. It was a terrifying experience for all, and I am very lucky that I was there when it happened.

These collars have a nice design, and seem to need about the right amount of force to release. Mine are Large, which take a good tug to separate. They add some complexity to dog handling, as you have to be careful when grabbing the dog by the collar. If you don't grab it over the section with the release buckle, you're probably going to wind up holding a collar while your dog romps off. I was also concerned that the collar might come off and get lost while the dogs run off leash in the woods -- which happened within two weeks of getting the collars. One of my dogs ran out of the brush sans collar; a $30 loss including the two ID tags she wears.

I like the collars enough that I promptly ordered a new one (along with new tags), but this time will make a modification to ensure they don't get lost. My dogs also use the SENSE-ation No-Pull Dog Harness - Large/Wide (Black). When walking on a leash, I connect the harness to one of the D rings on the collar. This seems to work well; the collar doesn't release because the harness restricts the amount of force placed on it. When they're off leash, I use a small clip to attach the the harness to one of the D rings on the collar. This way, if the collar comes off, it'll be dangling from the harness. Wish I'd thought of that $30 dollars ago!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicely made collar and it works as it should, November 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have the small size, as my golden is still a puppy so the ten to fourteen inch was right in the middle of his size needs. At first I thought, wow this looks a bit cumbersome and uncomfortable (what do I know? I've never worn a dog collar!). But as soon as I put it on him I knew it was comfortable.

I also tried pulling on it and it came apart as it was supposed to. We haven't had any issues with it coming off too easily, however. Once the husband was playing with him and he pulled it off, but they play a lot rougher than I do so I didn't feel that was inappropriate.

The small one is red. If color is an issue, be sure to pay attention when you are choosing a size. They show the red pic with all of them but some of them are black. I was fine either way, as black and red are my two favorite colors, but it might be an issue with some if they are not paying attention.

I would definitely recommend this collar. Just be sure to hook the leash through BOTH of the 'd' rings if you are putting a leash on it. If you only hook your leash through one of them you will pull the collar off. I'm just glad that somebody told me about this collar so I could keep my boy safe!

One other word to the wise - I am reading about a lot of people who said their dogs' collars were so tight they had trouble getting them off. Please be sure you know how tight/loose a dog collar should be! You should be able to easily run two fingers underneath a collar for it to be appropriate. If they are still growing, as my guy is, you have to check it frequently to make sure adjustments are made before it gets too tight.

ETA - my boy has just received the medium size one, as he outgrew his small (that was quick!), and the medium one is black. I think I like it better as the red color of the small size was kind of strange and didn't match his red harness, which is a good shade of red. I know, these things don't matter to some. But the black one is really lovely and, of course, just the same great quality.
