...gone the way of "New Coke."

I used to love this product. It was, by far, more preferable over Muscle Milk. It tasted great, was much like chocolate milk in terms of texture/"viscosity" and packed in a ton of protein and vitamins, with very little carbs, calories or fat. In terms of those aspects, it still offers the same nutritional value. HOWEVER, Premier Nutrition changed the formula such that it no longer is as tasty and now, basically, has the consistency of chocolate pudding. Trying to drink this stuff from the carton it comes in is similar to trying to "drink" a canister of yogurt. It just doesn't work. More importantly, the taste is just not quite the same.

I last purchased two cartons/cases of this product, not knowing that it was a "new formula." I consumed these almost every day after my workout sessions, so I didn't see any problem buying two cases at once. However, after I having tried one (single serving) and my wife having tried one (single serving), we took both cartons back for a refund. It is that bad. But, if this item sounds appealing to you, for what it is worth, you can pick it up at that super-warehouse-membership store (the one which offers 25lb cans of tuna fish) for about $10 less than advertised here.

Will go back to drinking Muscle Milk post-workout.

Not recommended.

UPDATE (05/23/11):

Desperate to see if, perhaps, Premier Nutrition acknowledged the feedback regarding their (inexplicable) decision to so horribly change their formula, my wife picked up another box of these protein shakes. Result? Either she happened to get some old stock or Premier Nutrition have returned to their once awesome formula. This box (expiration May 08, 2012, with ID No.

I drink one of these after coming home from the gym. They're filling and quite satisfying and I don't feel the need to eat anything else. They're best ice cold although the instructions say not to freeze them, so I stick a cold one from the fridge in to the freezer for just a few minutes as soon as I get home, and by the time I've changed out of my sweaty work-out clothes, it's really ice cold without actually being frozen.

160 calories - 30 from fat; total fat 3 grams; 5 grams carbs; 1 gram sugar; 3 grams fiber; 30 grams protein; 330 mg sodium; 680 mg potassium; no high fructose corn syrup. However, FYI, this does contain some calcium caseinate just in case you are not in favor of using calcium caseinate as a protein source.

I buy the chocolate flavor which is quite yummy, not artificial tasting and tastes like thick, chocolate milk - especially when ice cold as mentioned above. I've never tried any other flavors except the chocolate.

This price and shipping seem very expensive, but I buy them at one of the membership big-box warehouse type places (that begins with the letter "C") for a much better and more reasonable price.

UPDATE: June 30, 2011: My husband started drinking one of these every day usually around lunch time. After a few weeks he was having lots of problems with constipation. This went on for several months. Long story short - after he discontinued other things that he was eating/drinking to see if something in his regular diet was causing the problem and taking loads of fiber, he stopped drinking these protein drinks. Within less than a week he was back to normal. Then never bothered me but, I didn't drink one every day and I only drank one after working out (not sure if that had anything to do with it or not). Anyway, neither one of us drink these anymore.

Premier has changed their formula and the chocolate shakes no longer are appealing. I had used this product for the last year and then this week I got a new case with a new look. When I opened my shake and took a drink I almost spit it out thinking it was bad. I called Premier and they did verify they indeed changed their product. I will not longer be buying this product!

I have one of these shakes for breakfast most days. I love chocolate flavored things on principle, but I think the vanilla shakes are much better than the chocolate ones. I find them filling and healthful--getting lots of my daily protein. I am a physician and I watch what I eat. Here is my suggestion:
***Pour the shake into a blender and add a large handful of berries of your choice, then add a large handful of ice. (I also add some concentrated green tea and Ribose, 5gms.) Then blend into a delicious shake--because you'll find it is delicious this way. 30g of protein in one low-calorie shot like this is too good to pass up.

I have been drinking these shakes for over a year....breakfast with a banana and ice all blended together...like a chocolate/banana milkshake. For lunch I blend it witha tsp of coffee crystals.....out of this world. I too experienced severals cartons of "pudding' like consistency and called them or returned to Costco for a full refund or replacement. The last time I was at Costco they told me the rep had been there to look at the cases and open containers to see if any of them had the thick consistency. They were claiming it was from getting too hot while travelling from the distributor to the Costco store. By the way, I have lost 85 lbs drinking these. Yahoo !!
