Product Description

A premium, deluxe edition of the Original D&D® "White Box"!

It's the original Dungeons & Dragons game, packed with more content than ever before.

The original Dungeons & Dragons boxed set was published by TSR, Inc. in 1974 and was the very first roleplaying game, introducing concepts that have persisted throughout later editions. It included three small rules booklets in a white box.

This deluxe, premium reprint of the original "White Box" features new packaging and includes the following seven booklets:

 Volume 1: Men & Magic
 Volume 2: Monsters & Treasure
Volume 3: Underworld & Wilderness Adventures
 Supplement I: Greyhawk
 Supplement II: Blackmoor
 Supplement III: Eldritch Wizardry
Supplement IV: Gods, Demi-Gods & Heroes

Each booklet features new cover art, while the interior retains nostalgic original art. Booklets are packaged in an engraved illustrated wooden storage case.

I confess that I'm more than a little bit bitter. I pre-ordered this in March of 2013 as soon as it was announced for a family member. Over time I watched the estimated ship date slip, little by little until November came and went. Amazon changed their estimated ship date to December 17th, despite the fact that it was already for sale in the stores and their own associates had it available for purchase.

I logged in on December 17th, to see it listed as temporarily out of stock... funny, since they'd never had it in stock. Several calls with customer service later and all I could get as an answer is that they had no idea if they'd ever have it for sale.

Thankfully, I was able to cancel the order and place an order with one of their associates for about $10 more than Amazon had offered it for.

The box itself is gorgeous. The quality of the books is wonderful. The dice are pretty but perhaps a bit too snug in their seating... you have to pull the foam out to get the dice to pop out. This is a a worthy addition to your game collection if you suffer from the level of nostalgia that some of us do.

In terms of actual playability, I'm not so sure. State of the art in tabletop game design has come far in the last 40 years. Even so, we look forward to trying a game with the original rules after all of this time.

Be under no illusion here. You're basically buying a box. The books contained within look (authentically) cheap, if anything even cheaper printing than the originals. The dice are ok but no great shakes. So, is the box worth it? No, of course it's not though it is wood and looks at least as nice as those boxes you sometimes get wine in. Now we've accepted that this is a hugely over priced object what else is there to say? Well, here it is, the original D&D, the game that started it all. It's not very playable anymore but the ur-text here is fascinating. So much of what has persisted in the game is here in a rough form that really conveys how, far from looking to publish a professional game, the creators of early D&D were having fun, creating worlds that paid tribute to their heroes (Tolkien, Vance and Howard in particular) and forging a new pastime that a couple of million people still enjoy today. If you love D&D you'll want this. If you've never played it before you'll want Pathfinder instead as that's now the best place to start in the RPG hobby.

Picked this up on Bullmoose.com for $98. They don't know how to properly pack so I received it with two of the corners dinged.

This is a great set to review and see how D&D started. There are a lot of references to Chainmail, which unfortunately is NOT included. This would have been a nice item to include to complete the overall set.

D&D has come a long way since then so it is NOT for someone who wants to get started. If this is you, you should be looking at the D&D Next encounters at your local game shop or a local group looking for new members.

Overall, I am glad I purchased it and it has been a great read.

It includes all of the original printed works. This is great for collectors and histroians because it includes typos, errors and random changes in font/text that were present in the original edition. I have learned some things about original intent and the theory of the game from reading these materials. As someone who has been playing since around 1986, this was the one edition I never played. I am going to add in some OG house rules to my 5e game from some of this original source material. Other than that, the price is high but cheaper than finding original copies. I tried to get a decent original "Tomb of Horrors" and this is getting as bad as sports cards or comics for collectors. Five years ago you could get OG DMGs and PHBs for about $5, now they are up in the $50+ range for high quality. I see this appreciating in value and being a great conversation starter as well as an amusing trip down RPG history lane. This is the game that started it all and this is the original version (even if it is a reprint).

This is a copy of the original rules that came in a Wood Grain cardboard box... many selling for $3000 - $6000 in the collector's community today (aceaum.com). You can play this version of the game a lot easier than any version released since that time. Grab a copy, have a character setup and playing in under 10 min (try that with Pathfinder - lol). You also get the additional supplement books that can cost over $200 these days (depends on how nice they are, so beat up versions can be as little as $10). In any case, it's a good way to get a copy of the books that started Dungeons & Dragons.

And speaking of that, many of the old crew from TSR from the late 70s to early 80's arrive on the first Thursday of June for North Texas RPG Convention. You want to play some real Dungeons & Dragons with some of the original module designers, you'd better be there (it's the 6th year for the convention, where have you been ?)

Finally my set has been delivered this morning, four days before the estimated delivery date !! After 7 month (I preorder on July 8th), after many delays, this story is over.
The wooden box was not packaged very well with no foam inside with a little bubble bag in a little outer pack but it has arrived with no corner crushed, fortunately. ^_____^
The set have a wooden box with DnD dragon-breathing-fire, an old TSR logo, carved on the lid, very beautiful. The booklets are reprinted copy of the 3 original rule manuals 1974, plus 4 books that were released later. Ten polyhedral dice complete the set.
It is not that great thing I was expected for but overall a great deal, consider the price of the original collectable 1974 manuals. Maybe it is the only opportunity to get the very first books in the D&D history. :-D
