We bought this model with the porch option with a need for a truly insulated shelter for our two (then) 7 month old hound sisters. Unfortunately you can't see it beforehand except in the couple pictures that seem to be repeated on various websites. But that's the bane of the online buyer, so we accept that you try to do the research and roll the dice...

Sadly there weren't then any reviews but the outward design and look was something we were interested in.

To call this insulated is really, REALLY a stretch. Yes, there is a foil-backed paper in the walls but if it was more than 1/8" thick I'd be surprised. The walls have this sandwiched between some wood veneer on the inside and the cedar boards on the outside. And I stress the walls. There is no insulation in the floor nor is there any in the roof. In fact the floor pieces simply lie in place with no attention to the many gaps where wind may blow in. The roof is even more leaky as it has an otherwise great ridge vent that effectively captures a cold winter wind but also allows any heat to flow out. Probably nice in the summertime though.

Since our dogs were puppies they found ample chewing material here with sadly several small wood trim pieces that had been stapled on and were easily bitten off.

I ended up reworking the whole structure with weather-stripping at the joints and some insulation stuffed underneath, as well as closing up one of the openings with some plexiglass so the wind wouldn't blow through. Our dogs love each other so we didn't need the optional partition. That will be removed as the weather warms up.

This may be adequate for temps down to the high twenties for dogs conditioned for the outside (as ours are), or maybe in an unheated garage, but as serious outdoor, Upstate NY shelter, it was a big disappointment.
