5.0 out of 5 stars NCLEX Review, December 30, 2008

This review is from: Prentice Hall's Reviews & Rationales: Comprehensive NCLEX-RN® Review (Paperback)
I have 8 NCLEX-RN review books and this is my favorite. This is a very comprehensive review of what they taught in Nursing school, so it seems overwhelming at first. But, it has a great feature--the content that shows up in NCLEX tests most often is highlighted with an exclamation point in the margin. So, you can review the content with the exclamation points and feel fairly confident that you're studying what usually shows up on the test. This is also a great book to have while in school. For example, after you study Cardiovascular disorders in theory, you can review the Cardio disorder chapter and the Cardio pharmacology chapter. Each chapter has a section of NCLEX-style questions with rationales, so you get good experience answering NCLEX-style questions while you're in school. There is a separate section of pharmacological and parenteral therapies that is wonderful. If you just need to brush-up on meds, you can go to this section. Some of the pharmacology chapters are: Dosage Calculations, Peds Dosage calculations, IV therapy, Blood Therapy, TPN, Maternal and newborn meds., psychiatric meds., respiratory meds., Cardio meds., etc. I've read that NCLEX tests ask more pharmacology questions now, so I appreciate these medication-specific chapters. The tables and charts are also very concise and complete. All-in-all, this book was easy to read and has everything (content-wise) that you need. I haven't taken the NCLEX-RN test yet, but did well on the HESI predictor test that they made us take right before graduation. I know that as a nurse, I will also use this Reviews and Rationales book to review content that I'm starting to forget. Definitely worth the money--probably the best Nursing book I've bought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to have for HESI!, November 13, 2008
This review is from: Prentice Hall's Reviews & Rationales: Comprehensive NCLEX-RN® Review (Paperback)
Hi. I wrote the previous post about passing the HESI using this book. I actually just found out today that I passed NCLEX for the first time.
This is an excellent book! After I did not pass HESI the first time, I used this book heavily for questions, and I actually increased my score by 200 points using questions from this book, and using the Saunders Comp NCLEX RN review for content review. Finally passed it the 3rd time though (HESI).

In the two months that I reviewed for NCLEX, I predominantly did the Q trainers/Q bank from the Kaplan online course, but still made time to answer some of Hogan's quiz questions. I have to tell you though, my Diagnostic Test (first test you take for Kaplan to determine where you were) was in the passing range, which meant you're ready to take the NCLEX and was actually higher when I took the Readiness test.

I really credit this book in helping me not only via the CDROM, but also the content in this book. There's a really good section in Infection Control that I really highly recommend people read before they take NCLEX. It really helped!

Thank you so much Ms. Hogan for helping me pass!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent nursing school resource, May 6, 2009
This review is from: Prentice Hall's Reviews & Rationales: Comprehensive NCLEX-RN® Review (Paperback)
This is my favorite NCLEX book (I also have Saunders and Kaplan) as it is so well-organized, replete with necessary info, and offers rationales for the NCLEX-style question and answer sets.

It offers more background than Saunders which I need at this stage. --I just finished my first semester of nursing school. If I could only buy one NCLEX book, this would be it. The included CD is excellent (allows immediate review after answering questions).

I just scored a 98.4% on the HESI. I think this book helped. I also have Mary Ann Hogan's Pathophysiology: Reviews & Rationales. Another book that helped me was a pharmacology book by Richard Lehne.

My only criticism of the Hogan NCLEX book: this book contains some material that is beyond me right now. It is heavy to carry around. --But I know it will serve me well as the semesters pass.
