Honestly the best book for the Test and for the Course,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best Test Preparation for the AP United States History Test Preparations) (Paperback)
I purchased this book early in the year so I could have an alternative to reading the long chapters in my history book. This book gives a great concise summary of all the material you need to know for the AP test in May. The information was great in picking out the important stuff from each section in history. Even on regular class tests, with just review out of this book and various sights on the Internet I was able to score A's on basically every single test I took. After taking the practice tests (6 is more than any of the other books) I was so well prepared for the test and several questions from this book appeared on the test in a different format. All my friends purchased various other books and I read those also, but it came no where in matching the information in this book. For every question on the practice test, a complete reason for the answer is given and is so helpful when learning from errors. You can't go wrong choosing this book.

As a teacher of AP U.S. History myself, I can tell you that this is THE best review book on the market today. A few years ago, I purchased a set to give to every one of my students at the beginning of the year to use as a supplement to our textbook. The introduction of the book is very informative, explaining how the exam is administered and the exact formulas the evaluators themselves use to grade the essays and how that factors in with the multiple choice to calculate the final grade. The actual review content is thorough enough to provide an excellent "brain refresher," but isn't too dense. The six practice tests are excellent ways to review and see which areas a student needs to focus more on during their studying. I also highly recommend purchasing this same book but with the CD-ROM software to accompany it; the software creates a realistic testing environment, timing the student for both the multiple choice and writing sections as if they were taking the real test. The detailed explanations for each multiple choice question are also a great way to review, especially if you get a specific question wrong. I tell my students every year: don't go out and waste your money on buying more review books and practice tests, because everything you'll need to succeed on the exam is right in the book I gave you earlier this year!

The Best,

When I showed up with this book in APUSH one day, everybody was laughing at me. Everyone else bought the Princeton Review book. (Literally) However, this book got the best reviews on this site, and I was DETERMINED to use it. It's handy-sized, so I carried it around with me during school, doing some extra studying whenever I had a spare moment. This is not a flashy, funny book. I didn't WANT a flashy, funny book. This review book tells it like it is. It basically is a 215 page review of United States history from 1500 to 2001. It captures the major events and details from every time period from the discovery of America to 9/11. I just read it like a book. I was amazed by what I remembered. It writes in a simple, understandable fashion that allows students to grasp what it's trying to say without a lot of flowery detail. At the end are SIX practice tests. I took them all over a period of two months. At first, I was discouraged, because I wasn't doing as well as I wanted to. However, by the sixth test, I had done a lot better. There are literally, questions on the actual AP Exam that are nearly word-for-word from this book. I faced the test nervously, but knowing I'd done my best to prepare. It was harrowing, I must admit, but well worth it. Last month I got back my scores, and I got a 5. This book really did help me. It probably isn't the best for anyone. If you don't have a good memory, don't like reading much, or like to have a lot of extra junk in your book, this isn't the book for you. However, I have to say thanks to "The Best Test Preparation for the AP United States History Test" because it got me a 5. See if it'll work for you too.

as another reviewer commented. I bought this book mid-year to help me study for my AP USH unit reviews, and I have to say it was fantastic. The review is very concise, yet it offers all the facts you'll need to know on the exam. Also, the multiple choice practice tests were EXTREMELY helpful. Many of the questions in the book showed up on the actual exam, and I breezed through the MC portion of the test in half the allotted time, only omitting two questions. The part I actually found the most helpful was the selection of sample essays in the back of the book. Though some of them took strange stances, they were great for tying specific facts together thematically. I mentally referenced them to make educated guesses when necessary, and heavily borrowed from one on the Great Depression to provide background information for the DBQ. There are so many sample essays that you're almost sure to have *one* of the topics (or one closely related) turn up on the exam. I absolutely recommend this book -- I'll be looking for REA for my AP exams this year, too! My advice is: keep up with reading your textbook (I used American Pageant), start taking the practice tests about a month before the AP exam, take notes on the questions you miss (the detailed explanations to the MC questions are fantastic), and don't study the night before the test. Have a party. Best of luck in May.

I took the AP test in May of 1999, and felt very confident in my performance. I haven't received my results yet, but the book was a huge help. I read most of the review section, and took 4 of the 6 practice tests. The DBQs in the practice test seemed to be harder than on the actual test. The one fault I found with the book was that the practice test questions were almost direct quotations from the review text, which didn't exactly help me. Over all the book was a great. The review section was wonderful, and covered some material my book left out. This book excellent, I would recommend it to anyyone !

I found the AP US History Review book very helpful. The review was especially helpful - it was clear and concise. And the practice exams - "forget-about-it." The trick is that you have to already know what you are studying before you use the book because afterall, the book is just a review. It should only remind you of what you already know. The book is just brief enough to not cloud your mind and confuse you and is just comprehensive enough to get you everything you need to know. All said and done, I would definately recommend this book to anyone who wants to pass the exam, but beware, you must study too.

best review for AP U.S. History,

REA's review section was very comprehensive and still very easy to read. I ignored my textbook and most of my class notes when I started reviewing for the AP exam and the SAT II's, and this book covered EVERYTHING I encountered on both tests. There are SIX practice exams, and lots of essay topics for practice. There are a couple typos and mistakes in the answer key, but much less than the review books by Kaplan and Princeton Review usually have. Concerns about bad photocopies of maps are minimal. So you can't answer one question, no big deal. The answer key provides thorough explanations for the answers so that you're able to understand why the other possibilities are incorrect. Even if you don't need the course review section, the practice tests and the explanations for answers are an invaluable resource for knowing how to do well on the exam. I got a 5 on the AP exam and a 770 on the SAT II subject test, thanks to this book. Amazon has a great price and if you want to score well, this book completely trashes all of its competitors.

5 stars because I got a 5 on the AP...,

...as well as a 750 on the SAT II. If you read this entire book and do all the practice tests, you should not get below a 4. It is comprehensive, accurate and interesting. However, it is really long and I only got through half of it, but the other half was fresh in my mind so it didn't matter. The pros of this book are that it covers everything, it can be used to study for the SAT II, it has really good practice tests and it is fun to read for a history book. The cons are that it is really long and it doesn't help you for the DBQ. This is not a book for slackers or crammers! You need to start reading at least 2 weeks in advance of the test if you want to finish on time. But it's the best book out there and even Barron's has to bow down to it.

This book definately helped me for the May 2000 exam. It had the compressed version of all the text. It discussed the important topics that were divided into three parts: Politics, Economic, and Social & Culture. The book has 6 tests that were a good practice , and each question has an explanation. The DBQs are also included with sample essays. It is a great method of review. I got the book about 3-4 weeks before the test date and just read and took the tests. I relied on this book and my basic knowledge of history. It is a great test prep book. Cons: there are some typos in the answer key. but if youre sharp youll pick them up and thatll show that you know your stuff!! Another con is that the book doesnt have that many techniques, but the pros outweigh the cons. If it wasnt for this test prep, i wouldnt have gotten a 5 on the exam.

When studying for the AP US History Exam of May 2000, I found it impossible to study off of my extensive in-class notes with only two weeks left before the test. That's when I finally purchased this review book that our history teacher had been recommending since the beginning of the school year. I didn't feel like I had a lot of hope for the test because I hadn't retained a lot of the information during the year, but this book covered just enough without over-emphasizing and wasting time. The organization allowed me to digest most of the information in the book, including small details. I would recommend going through with a highlighter over important parts you feel you may be likely to forget and later going back and reviewing to reemphasize. It seems like a lot of reading and studying, but it is possible to complete within a weeks time if you put in the effort. As further proof of how well this book prepped me, I received a 5 on my exam.
