4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for test prep, September 6, 2006
This review is from: How to Prepare for the New Jersey Math HSPA 11 Exam: High School Proficiency Assessment (Barron's HPSA: New Jersey Math) (Paperback)
The Barron's prep book is well organized, arranged according to the NJCCCS math clusters, has a good index in the back, and uses great explanatory text, which is then followed by explained solutions to sample problems.

There are plenty of practice problems, and two full practice HSPA exams. An answer key to all practice problems is in the back of the text. The book has a copy of NJ's "student reference sheet."

My only concern is that the book is not as comprehensive as the Glatzer & Glatzer HSPA test prep book - meaning that it does not cover every skill and is not always at the HSPA level of difficulty. It is more of a "glorified GEPA with HSPA skills" book.

However, for low achieving students, this book might be the best thing going. I don't think students would find it intimidating, it is well written with lots of explanatory text (more so than perhaps any other test prep book I've looked at - and I've looked at a lot!) and provides clear, written solutions to every sample problem.

It could also make a handy supplement for students having difficulty with the Glatzer & Glatzer test prep book, since it provides plenty of narrative on math skills and offers many solved sample problems.
