5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the PPST and the PLT
I am writing this review because I think this book deserves an excellent rating. I used this book to prepare for a few tests. The practice PLT in the book was just like the test that I took this Saturday. The practice PPST in this book was just like the PPST that I took in September. Every answer to the practice PPST and the practice PLT was explained.

This is a good reference book for general idea of all of the teacher examinations. But if you are going to take only a few specific examinations such as Praxis II mathematics, you are buying a lot of unnecessary material. For example, the CD ROM had nothing that I needed on it.

The PPST review was excellent and the PLT review was very good. I want to get certified in a few states so I liked the teacher certification information in the book. There are brief descriptions and a few sample questions for most of the Subject Assessments. I would not buy the book just to prepare for these subjevct assessments. But there is very little review available for most Subject Assessments, and it was nice to get some extra help in a PPST/PLT book. The answers to Subject Assessment practice questions are not explained.

Becoming a teacher means a lot of testing and I learned a lot about the Praxis tests and books during the last six months. The tests have changed a lot and I want to share some of what I learned. I hope it helps. The Core Battery Tests are no longer given. This Praxis book and the PPST books are still good. But most of the NTE books are obsolete. Don't waste your money on books that just prepare you for the Core Battery Test.

Most of the ETS Subject Assessment books are for the old tests that are not given any more. If you get a book from ETS be sure the test is still given.

I recommend this Praxis book for anyone who has to take the PPST or the PLT. If you are going to take the CBT, I hear the Barrons Praxis I book is best because it has good review and a practice CBT.

If you are going to take the Subject Assessment mathematics test, I hear that the ETS Mathematics Review Kit is good for practice test questions. My professor told me there is not much for the other Subject Assessments. Good luck.

5.0 out of 5 stars A PRAXIS Masterpiece, February 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Prepare for PRAXIS with CD; NTE, PLT, PPST-CBT and Subject Assessments (Paperback)
I've been helping college students prepare for PRAXIS and NTE tests for years. This new edition is simply the very best book available.

The review is very clear and helpful. The practice tests are right on target. This is the only book with effective preparation for the PLT.

My students appreciate the extra help this book gives about becoming certified as a teacher, about writing a resume, and about finding a teaching position.

I recommend this book to every student who will take a Praxis test.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not very comprehensive, June 8, 2001

This review is from: How to Prepare for PRAXIS with CD; NTE, PLT, PPST-CBT and Subject Assessments (Paperback)
I bought this book specifically to study for a subject area test, hoping to get an idea of the general types of questions that would be covered for the social studies exams. I was expecting a CD that I'd use with my computer to take a simulated test. What I received was a book with 25 practice questions. Many of these contained questions for which two of the four answers could have been correct--one is a p.c. answer and the other is what I learned was correct in graduate level history classes. The book fails to acknowledge this and offer guidelines, and has left me frightened about taking the exam in a couple of weeks.

As a historian, my primary concern was what would be covered in the 'other social studies' topics and the PLT portion. Non-history social studies topics are covered in 2 pages of review and 5 practice questions. The PLT review contains the following sentence, "Most Native Americans living today are ANCESTORS of tribes conquered and put on reservations about 100 years ago." I hope no one uses that pearl of wisdom on an answer! [This isn't merely a typo, ancestors is used instead of decendents a number of times.]

As for that CD, it's an audio CD that is used to prepare for the listening portion of the Praxis, it is not a tool to simulate the test.

1.0 out of 5 stars How to Prepare for PRAXIS with CD; NTE, PLT, PPST-CBT and S, November 14, 2000

I thought this book was going to be the biggest help in passing the first part of Praxis but it was of little help. There are many problems with this book and it begins and ends with the sample tests given in the book. I found them to be poor in their construction, accuracy and worst of all they do not explain their answers which is a big turn-off for me because it doesn't help you learn.

While this book may help you in your quest to be a teacher, it is relatively easy to find out your requirements outlined in this book on-line, and the book is packed with useless information for most people.

If you are beginning your career as a teacher, this book may be helpful. In the end if you are going to purchase this book also purchase at least one more book which will undoubtedly prepare you better for the tests than this book. If I had only purchased this book, I would have failed the exams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended -- Useful Subject Assessment Section, June 25, 2001
This review is from: How to Prepare for PRAXIS with CD; NTE, PLT, PPST-CBT and Subject Assessments (Paperback)
This book got me through my Praxis tests with flying colors. I recommend it highly for the PPST and the PLT.

I also had to take a social studdies subject assessment. Let me tell you that there is almost no review available for this test. I only found the newspaper print books from ETS with about 10 questions and the questions in this book. I was very thankful to get some additional help. I don't know anyone who bought the book just for the subject assessment section, and you should not do that either. But if you buy the book for the main Praxis tests you'll be happy for this extra help.

It would be terrible if Barrons takes out the subject assessment section because of the criticism, and it would probably not cost them the sales of any books. It would only mean to people like me that there will be even less help for these tests.

4.0 out of 5 stars PASSED ON FIRST TRY, August 8, 2001
This review is from: How to Prepare for PRAXIS with CD; NTE, PLT, PPST-CBT and Subject Assessments (Paperback)
I bought this book one week before the test was to be administered. As I thumbed through I found out on test day, that this prep, was very useful. Taking the Elementary Education: Content Knowledge portion, as i was told, is very difficult. However, this study guide really was of great help especially in the area of science and math.

Thankfully, I passed this test, with flying colors, on my first attempt. I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about passing this exam.

ps Pray and study smart.

2.0 out of 5 stars Jargon, March 6, 2001
This review is from: How to Prepare for PRAXIS with CD; NTE, PLT, PPST-CBT and Subject Assessments (Paperback)
This book is nothing but a bunch of jargon. I just received the results from 2 parts of the praxis test and I failed again. I studied a bunch of unnecessary information and did not feel prepared for the test. However, the General Knowledge and Communications with audio was a good predictor of what was going to be on the test.
