I successfully used this book to prepare for the removal of major uterine fibroids. I was frightened at the prospect of my first ever surgery and I would not have come out of it so positively without the book and tape. My surgeon was amazed at my recovery and he only does this type of surgery. Try it for yourself, you have nothing to lose and peace of mind and body to...

2.0 out of 5 stars This Book Might Help You, But I Didn't Like It
"prepare for surgery, heal faster" has helpful though simple ideas in it. i was frustrated as i read it because the author refers very frequently to the companion tape. "if you listen to the tape, you will understand this." "if you want to benefit from this concept, listen to the tape. listen many times a day.". "these feelings will...

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, It Helps, April 14, 2005

The book is both reassuring and helpful. It gives very practical tips on how to make your surgery successful - actions that can be done from the time you get the book to after surgery.

The audio tape takes you through relaxation exercises that will at the very least help you to get to sleep at night. More importantly, the tape will help you to learn to relax so that you can think better during a stressful time.

I took the tape into pre-op. The surgeons said they wished everyone would do that because I was so relaxed and confident about the surgery.

Most important, I got out of the hospital early and healed quickly. I give the book and tape credit in helping me accomplish this.

I liked this book because the emphasis was on me. My healing, my relaxation, my thoughts, it was up to me to help myself. I was very anxious before surgery and know from prior experience how worked up I can get. I am so thankful that I didn't let myself get all stressed out and took the time to help me. This book really helped me. I felt more relaxed and really prepared for the surgery. I didn't have the tapes but I used my own music which worked fine. I do yoga and have learned to meditate pretty good. But, if you don't know how to relax and can't do it on your own, get the tape which can only enhance your experience. My husband even commented how calm I was. I don't know if it has helped me to heal faster but the nurses did say I wasn't taking as much pain medication and family and friends are amazed how well I am doing. But I guess that depends on the person. The bottom line is, if you get stressed out about surgery yet want to feel more in control, more at peace, focus on your own positive surgical outcome, and reduce anxiety, this book is for you. I am much stronger for it and the next time surgery comes around I'll read it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Works! I'm living Proof, September 10, 2004
This review is from: Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster: A Guide Of Mind-Body Techniques (Paperback)
I got the book and tape less than a week before surgery for cancer, on the recommendation of the hospital social worker, and another therapist, and was able to relax, feel optimistic and positive before and after surgery. Woke up feeling good, went off the pain medication, and went home less than 24 hours after surgery. Have healed quickly, and still use the tape daily for relaxation and continued healing of my condition. Nurses and doctors took note of the book and tape!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read the book, used the tape, had a great recovery!, March 30, 1999

This review is from: Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster: A Guide Of Mind-Body Techniques (Paperback)
This is an important book! Peggy Huddleston tells you how to use relaxation methods and visualization of your outcomes (for surgery and recovery - or chemotherapy) in a very straightforward, practical way. She also tells you how to approach your surgeon and anesthesiologist before surgery, what kinds of questions to ask them, and how to get them to help ensure a positive outcome/recovery by using healing statements during surgery and post-op. Most of the pieces of Peggy's method may seem familiar, but no one has put them in one place as such an easy to use guide. I used the book and tape prior to major surgery, got out of the hospital (my choice) in 1 day, and took no pain meds after 1 day at home because I felt so good. It worked for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you fear surgery, read this book and relax with the tape., August 15, 2001

This review is from: Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster: A Guide Of Mind-Body Techniques (Paperback)
For over three years,I had severe hip pain and knew I needed a hip replacement. Being a nurse, and knowing all the risks, I put the inevitable off (out of fear). A friend gave me the book and audio tape "Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster" by Peggy Huddleston. After reading the book and listening to the tape one to two times a day, I had the courage to call an Orthopedic Surgeon and make an appointment. I was scheduled for surgery eight weeks later. During the eight weeks, I reread the book and listened to the relaxation/healing tape one to two times a day. On the day of surgery, I was completely relaxed and at peace. I went into the OR confident everything would turn out well, which it did. I have made a full recovery. I continue using the tape for relaxation. This book and tape has helped my friends and acquaintances prepare for their surgery with less fear. By reading this book and listening to the relaxation tape, you will be able to face your surgery without fear.

Peggy Huddleston's "Prepare for surgery, heal faster" book was extrememly helpful to me when I recently had surgery.I have been an operating room nurse for 20 plus years but had never been the patient in surgery. Reading this book and listening to the relaxation/healing tape that is its companion gave me the coping tools I needed to under go surgery. The book explains 5 steps to prepare yourself for surgery resulting in a more positive surgical outcome. Surgery is a very stressful event no matter how major or minor the procedure is. I recommend that every person facing surgery should read the book and listen to the companion tape. You will be amazed how calm, relaxed, and comfortable you will feel before during and after your surgery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made all the Difference, October 6, 2000

A friend gave me this book just after I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. It, along with the tape that goes along with it, were my constant companions on the journey through surgery and recovery. It really helped me not freak out about everything. I was bleassed by having a benign tumor, but I lost my hearing on the left side and I still ahve numerous troubles from the tumor.

I recommend it to anyone facing any type of surgery or long term recovery. I don't care what the circumstance, anything like that is freaky, and I think anyone on that path will find this book useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Anyone facing Surgery, March 5, 2007
By
JJ "seeker" (Windermere, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster: A Guide Of Mind-Body Techniques (Paperback)
I highly recommend this book for anyone having surgery. It truly made a difference in my attitude prior to the procedure and my subsequent healing.

Seven years ago, I underwent an emergency appendectomy, which was performed within hours of my doctor's diagnosis. I had no time to mentally prepare myself, and as this was my first surgery and hospital stay, I was very frightened. Six months later, I underwent another procedure to remove adhesions, fibroids, endometrial tissue, and subsequently, my left ovary and tube. Once again, I was extremely anxious, both before the surgery and afterwards. I remember very little about that time, but I do recall that I was in a great deal of pain for a long time.

This year, my doctors found a football-sized fibroid. My only option was surgery, as the mass was pressing on my right kidney and impairing its function. This time, I was determined that I would be an active participant in my surgery and healing. After seeing Ms. Huddleston's book and CD recommended on another website, I ordered both. The book arrived in adequate time for me to read it and begin implementing its suggestions. Prior to the arrival of the meditation CD, I used a CD of ocean waves as the basis for my meditation. Each time I had contact with my doctors or other healthcare professionals, I told them what I was doing and how I was preparing myself. Everyone was very encouraging and supportive. I did not use the meditation CD during surgery - although I had permission to do so - but I did give a list of affirmations to my anesthesiologist. He stated that he was very familiar with the process of using affirmations, and was happy to read them to me during surgery. I felt very calm and relaxed as I waited in pre-op, and experienced no anxiety in connection with the impending procedure.

Following my surgery, I was quite lucid and comfortable, and remained relatively pain-free. Everyone, from doctors to nurses to visiting friends, was amazed at my positive outlook and good spirits. I have continued to refer to the book and use the CD as I recover at home. Despite the complexity of my surgery, I have required only one prescription pain pill and one Tylenol per day - and sometimes no meds at all. During my first post-op visit (a week following the surgery), everyone commented on the fact that I looked great and seemed to be recovering quickly. I attribute this not only to the suggestions I implemented from Ms. Huddleston's book, but also to the prayers and positive thoughts that were offered on my behalf.

I cannot recommend this book enough. In fact, I am purchasing several copies to give to my doctors and to the hospital. I believe in its philosophy and message that strongly.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a must for anyone who cares, September 6, 2006
This review is from: Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster: A Guide Of Mind-Body Techniques (Paperback)
The book is excellent and yet simple to read. Anyone who is expecting to undergo surgery should ready it. In addition, doctors (surgeon or anestesiologist) and health care practicioners should read it as well. It will make them better professional and it will make a difference in the health care system and in the patients.

I started reading it and listening to the CD three days before the surgery. Later, I went into the operation room with a list of affirmations on a paper sheet, based on what is suggested by the author. Everything went great and the doctors read the affirmations to me as requested.

Before the surgery I was happy and peaceful and after, I felt very confortable, excepting the night I spent in the hospital room, (too many electrical equipment in my room, I hated it) Pain, what was that? Don't remember it. During the actual surgery I listened to a brain entrainment meditation CD (called Insight), but a day after, I resumed listening to the CD that sells with the book.

It has been three weeks and a day after my surgery (it took over 2 hours) and I am already working out, claimbing stairs (6 floors) and helped in a moving last weekend. It has been amazing. I still listen to the CD, to continue the healing and have modified the visualisations.

Apart from the above, the book comes with info on useful supplements for the healing and on those to avoid as well. I feel very fortunate that I chose to buy this book and highly recommend it.
