4.0 out of 5 stars If you can buy *only* one book, this is the one!, April 28, 2000

I am a professional TOEFL prep instructor. Here is my review:

If you can only buy one book, this is the one.

However, I would*not* recommend that you buy only this book--it is not enough. You need to buy at least two other titles as well--the official "TOEFL Kit" and the "PowerPrep TOEFL" software.

First, this book does NOT have a computer test. Instead, it has some questions in the book that simulate the computer questions. Half of the tests are written for people who have to take the paper test, the other half are for people who have to take the computer test.

If you can only buy one book, you need a review of grammar and other sections of the test, and you want some practice tests, this book is your best choice. It has a lot of grammar explanations and lots of practice questions.

So, it is a great value--the price is low, and you get a lot of questions.

However, the book is not perfect. Some of the questions are old, and you will not see those types on the

TOEFL anymore. Furthermore, many of the questions are easier than the real TOEFL, especially the reading sections. Many of my students have said that the reading section is very, very hard and that they were not prepared for the real TOEFL when they took it.

In short, if you can only buy one book, this one is okay, but you really should buy official TOEFL materials so that you will be ready for the real test when you take it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!, September 24, 2000

I bought this book because it has received so many great reviews. I'm very grateful to those who wrote the reviews. This book is excellent in providing organized explanations and toefl-standard tests. The model tests are really great exercises. The CD-ROM has a good quality. There is only one weakness, I think. I wish the writing review section has more detailed guidelines and different kinds of essay examples. Overall, I strongly recommend this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars This book has the wrong CDs!, March 29, 2000

THIS EDITION DOES NOT CONTAIN THE CORRECT CD. THE PUBLISHER HAS SAID THAT THEY MADE A B-I-I-I-I-G MISTAKE AND WILL BE RELEASING A NEW VERSION WITH THE CORRECT CD IN SEPTEMBER, 2001.

=================================== ORIGINAL REVIEW OF THE 9TH EDITION ===================================

First, this book does NOT come with audiocassettes! Instead, the audio portion of the book comes on 4 CDs. So, if you do not have a CD player, you will NOT be able to listen to the Listening Practice. This book does NOT have a computer test. Instead, it has some questions in the book that simulate the computer questions. Half of the tests are written for people who have to take the paper test, the other half are for people who have to take the computer test.

Does the CD rom include listening test ? As the book states that there are 8 model tests, so i suppose there should be listening audio included in the CD rom .

Use some common sense.

If you click on the picture of the book, you will be able to read among other things:

"with CD-ROM containing model computer-based tests and listening comprehension"

Good luck, guys!
