Mager takes the reader on a little interactive journey through the process of understanding what instructional objectives are and are not. It is one of the most fun books I have read and kept my interest throughout. Mager employs an underlying playful theme in the book, which captivates the reader and allures him into the game. The chapters are short but powerful, and lead the reader through the process, ensuring that each concept is understood before going on to the next. If you are a little fuzzy about instructional objectives, this is the book for you!
The preface of the book really sets the stage that Mager is trying to create. "If you are not interested in demonstrating achievement of your objectives, you have just finished this book" (Page vi). A simple, but a powerful way of letting the reader know what kind of journey they are about to embark on. Any educator or planner should be interested in how to demonstrate that they have accomplished the objectives they establish. Mager provokes reflective thought from the get go and keeps it going throughout the entire piece. Mager does a great job explaining how to establish effective objectives.

The book opens with background chapters well written to provide insight for the reader. The purpose of writing objectives and why one should even care about them are covered with humor and zest. What makes an objective useful and how it is worded is very important, and Mager presents some fun and real life examples to drive home the importance of communication. How an objective is worded and conveyed to the student is the most critical component of understanding instructional objective writing, because if they are not clearly communicated, they are not functional, practical, or useful.
