5.0 out of 5 stars Great Life Skills Training
This is a great motivational book for someone on the verge of entering into adulthood. Dr. Baker pinpoints specific skills needed for a variety of "life situations" by catagorizing them and dealing with them individually. It starts out with mapping out assets and challenges. There are activity pages to use when anger is an issue and suggestions on calming ones self...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but too focused on social issues.
The first chapters are great in this book but the vast majority is a teaching plan for communication problems. The information is good but not exactly what I wanted as my son is already in these types of programs at school and at home. Theses social things need to be introduced from the time the kids are very young because it takes so long for them to learn. Its a bit...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Life Skills Training, July 10, 2006
This review is from: Preparing for Life: The Complete Guide for Transitioning to Adulthood for Those with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome (Paperback)
This is a great motivational book for someone on the verge of entering into adulthood. Dr. Baker pinpoints specific skills needed for a variety of "life situations" by catagorizing them and dealing with them individually. It starts out with mapping out assets and challenges. There are activity pages to use when anger is an issue and suggestions on calming ones self. The book includes a 16 page section on dating. It offers great advice for job seekers, from writing resumes to handling rejection. These are only a few of the sections found in this book. It truly is indispensable for anyone with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome. I definitely recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Navigator, December 11, 2006
This review is from: Preparing for Life: The Complete Guide for Transitioning to Adulthood for Those with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome (Paperback)
This book is truly a Godsend. It is ideal for people on the autism/Asperger's spectrum who are approaching adulthood. Dr. Baker is plainly a gifted man and this book is proof positive of his logical vision. He is also a brilliant navigator who leads expeditions for people on the a/A spectrum into understanding the neurotypical world and issues in it.

I like the way he organizes assets and challenges by putting them into categories, e.g. work, social, etc. Dr. Baker includes some good practical techniques for handling difficult emotions. His advice on dating and employment issues is something no adult on the spectrum should go without reading. If you are an adult on the spectrum, please make this book your best friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on social skills, July 6, 2006
This review is from: Preparing for Life: The Complete Guide for Transitioning to Adulthood for Those with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome (Paperback)
"Preparing for Life" was a terrific book. If someone you know has Autism/Asperger's and is getting ready for any major transitions in life, this book is highly recommended. It comes with worksheets and very helpful activities to help one reach their goals and be more confident with who they are. It is a highly motivational book in that it helps an individual not to be afraid to try new things and gives much needed assistance in dealing with real-life circumstances that might be challenging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deals with a variety of key issues, June 16, 2006
This review is from: Preparing for Life: The Complete Guide for Transitioning to Adulthood for Those with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome (Paperback)
Life situations, from simple conversation to employment skills, have been touched on in this indispensable book. So many ideas were gleened from this thorough book. It was easy to read and not filled with alot of technical verbage to work through. It gets straight to the point of each issue and has very workable instructions for teaching purposes. This and "1001 Great Ideas" by Ellen Notbohm are excellent resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource, June 16, 2006
This review is from: Preparing for Life: The Complete Guide for Transitioning to Adulthood for Those with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome (Paperback)
Even though I am not an educator, I have a relative with Autism. I have now, through the reading of this book as well as others, learned more of the struggles that many with Autism face. There were activities and lessons taught in this book that I can vary and even teach one on one with my nephew. I feel like I have gained a world of knowledge of how I can be an encouragement to him. Another great book that was a huge help to me was the "1001 Great Ideas for Teaching and Raising Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders".

I have not read a better book on social skills. This book offers in depth information and "how to" skills. I feel like I have gained invaluable knowledge that I can pass on to my students to better prepare them for life in all aspects. This is a great book for parents and educators.

I use Dr. Bakers manuals and pictures books in my group practice, and find them to be an invaluable tool for social skills training. They are easy to use and address the areas of difficulty that many of my clients struggle with. I also share the skills sheets with my clients' teachers and other caregivers to promote genrealization of the skills.

The gains my clients have made by learning and using the skills are measueable. Dr. Baker's books are a necessary tool for any social skills trainging program.

One of my sons is seeing a therapist & she has stated that she feels he has some traits of AS. Well, after looking into it more, it would seem that both of my sons do. They are 15 & 20 and both of them enjoyed this book & seeing their own traits along with the traits of other family members being pointed out. The good thing is that it also gave them insight into why other people respond to them the way they do. I think this book will help them both in relating to other people. This has been a very handy book for them. The only problem with this book is it can be pretty dry reading at times so they needed to take breaks in reading it some & this is from kids that really enjoy reading.

The latter half of the book has an entire section of mini-lessons devoted to useful topics - anger managment, coping with anxiety, dating etc. The ideas are shared clearly and concisely. I am using these with a young man who came to my office for counseling.
