Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This book contains over 300 questions and answers on various important aspects of computers. Topics include both basic and state-of-the-art concepts from digital logic to the design of a complete microcomputer. This book is written to present a clear understanding of the principles and basic tools required to design typical digital systems such as microcomputers. The book will serve as a detailed study guide to find quick answers to questions associated with topics such as digital logic, computer architecture/organization, and microprocessor-based system design. The author strongly believes that working professionals and graduating seniors in electrical/computer engineering and computer science will find this book very useful while preparing for job interviews. The book is written based upon the author’s academic background and many years of industrial experience in computers.

It is the author’s opinion that professionals and students in computers will be able to build successful careers after a clear understanding of the materials presented in this book. It will also provide them with a strong background in electrical/computer engineering and computer science. The book is written based upon the author’s previous book entitled “Fundamentals of Digital Logic and Microcomputer Design” ( Third edition, ISBN # 0966-4980-3-8) published by Rafi Systems, Inc. in 2000. Therefore, details of the answers to the questions can be found in that book. The materials included in this book are divided into seven chapters as follows:

* Chapter 1 presents Q and A’s on basic terminologies, fundamental concepts of digital integrated circuits using transistors and a comparison of LSTTL, HC, and HCT IC characteristics.

* Chapter 2 contains Q and A’s on digital logic design. An introduction to VHDL and Verilog is also included.

* Chapter 3 covers Q and A’s on CPU design. A comparison of RISC vs. CISC is provided.

* Chapter 4 contains Q and A’s on memory and I/O. Basics of memory array design, flash, SDRAM, cache, and also, I/O techniques associated with microprocessors are included.

* Chapter 5 covers Q and A’s on microcomputer hardware and software. Topics include typical microprocessor architectures, clock and reset circuits, programming languages, and instruction set design.

* Chapters 6 and 7 contain Q and A’s on Intel and Motorola microprocessors respectively. Intel 8086 and Motorola 68000 are covered in details. The features of these microprocessors are then compared with 32-bit microprocessors from each of these manufacturers.

The author wishes to express his sincere appreciation to Dr. W. C. Miller of the University of Windsor, Canada, for his inspiration and support throughout the writing effort. Dr. M. Rafiquzzaman, Pomona, California

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable, it's loaded with gold, September 15, 2001

This review is from: Preparing for an Outstanding Career in Computers (Paperback)
This book is great for first course as well as professional engineers; it is very easy to understand. It has lots of good examples. I will keep this book for a long time. It has so much information about everything, from basic definition of computer to design of microprocessors. More likely, this book presents a comprehensive and detailed study guide for students in electrical/computer engineering, computer science, and working professionals. It has the most up-to-date concepts and technologies portrayed in a simple question and answer format.
This book is a must for anyone who is either looking for a job now or possibly will be in the future, which is just about all of us nowadays. Moreover, this book is an excellent guide for anyone who is nervous about interview questions. It is a no-nonsense reference guide to the kinds of questions to expect during the interview and what the both weak and strong responses are to them.
I especially like the list of questions and answers presented in the book. The author has done a great job in pulling together the elements, which spell success in the quest for employment. This book is concise and to the point, and well worth the price. This book is not only helpful in finding jobs but also can be kept just for the self-confidence and self-examination opportunity it gives you. I can truly attribute this book to helping me prepare for the interviews. I am certain, once I finish reading this book, I will be brimming with confidence for my new career!
I highly recommend this text for every student and professional. I guess buying this book was the best thing I did for my recent job search.

1.0 out of 5 stars Watch out for this one, September 21, 2004
This review is from: Preparing for an Outstanding Career in Computers (Paperback)
BE WARNED: First of all, I suggest you notice that this book is published by the author himself and not by any reputable publishing firm. Secondly, notice how all the other reviews of this book look eerily similar to each other and were all issued on the same day. I suspect the author of this book is trying to exaggerate its popularity by writing his own editorials and therefore bolster sales for his own publishing house. That being said...

This book does cover a lot of very useful information but it only glosses over the material and has plenty of errors or omissions. It's too brief to be useful to a real professional or dedicated student and too technical for a beginner. It is most certainly not worth $20 for such a thin paperback.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, October 20, 2004
This review is from: Preparing for an Outstanding Career in Computers (Paperback)
I have been using this book for some time now, and found it very useful. It contains a lot of accurate and technical information. I absolutely disagree with the negative and unfair comment left above. The user above may have tried to upload their comments again and again on the same day thinking that their comment hasn't posted on Amazon.com's website since it did not appear immendiately. The author of this book wrote several books in the past with reputable publishers such as Wiley and Prentice-Hall. He is an auhtority in this field. I found this book very informative, and would rate it with five stars.
