I got this CD a couple of weeks before my laparoscopic gall bladder surgery. I was very anxious and dreading the surgery. I started practicing with it twice a day, and my anxiety lessened considerably. I also felt better toward the doctors, hospital, etc. On the day of surgery I was able to be relaxed. I used it before and after surgery. The surgeon said my bleeding was very little. I was able to do fine without using any painkillers after the surgery. I was ok with using them if necessary, I just didn't need them. Every time the pain started, I'd listen to the tape and feel much better. The first day I listened to it a lot, then less the next day. I healed very quickly.

I had already done similar relaxation with my dentist, who was trained in it, so it was easy for me to pick up on.

I didn't expect it to help as much as it did. I'd definitely use this again if I needed surgery. Well worth the cost.

I was facing henia repair sugery. When facing proceedures like this, I tend to have a fair amount of anxiety - the "what if" kind. Dr. Rossman takes you through a deep relaxation technique, and then focuses on the positive benefits of surgery. He talks the skill of your surgical team, and about your body and its healing mechanisms.
I got this CD thee weeks before my surgery and played it almost every day.
I had a much more positive attitude and greatly reduced anxiety. The operation went well, and I only needed two pain pills afterwards. I can't say enough good things about this CD!

I used this cd for the month before surgery, day of surgery and recovery time. It helped me tremendously and I highly recommend it to anyone facing surgery or procedures of any kind. I think pre-op dept should be offering this cd to their patients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helps to get ready, October 9, 2010

ADDED a few weeks after the surgery: I don't know how much to blame Rossman for this, but I am now "famous" at the hospital for my unbelievable pain tolerance. Truthfully, the pain wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. The main issue was getting them to believe me & reduce the narcotics so I could think!

Have been listening to this every night since I got it a week ago. Rossman's imagery is neutral & "nondenominational," which works for me. Rossman offers 3 separate sections for pre-surgery, day of, & healing after. I begin at presurgery when I go to bed at night & continue to listen to all 3 parts. Sometimes I wake up at points when Rossman suggests it, but not always.

Listening to "Preparing for Surgery" has made a difference already in how anxious I feel about the upcoming major surgery, which is extremely invasive & not optional. I expect it to be harder than the last time, when I was 20 years younger & quite fit. I was pretty scared about how hard it would be this time. Rossman helps.

I also tried Belleruth Naparstek's "Meditations to Promote Successful Surgery," which does not work for me. Naparstek's imagery on CD 1 is not compatible with my Buddhist beliefs. (Angels & "guardians"? Really?) Naparstek's CD 2 is music I do not care for.

If you're not an "angels" person, go with Rossman. You can make your own music playlist for during the surgery. I'm going to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pre-op exercises, April 27, 2008

Being that this was my first major operation, I wanted it to go as smoothly as possible. I listened to the instructional CD as soon as I received it and followed the suggestions. Three days before my surgery I listened to the guided imagery and it helped me to relax and anticipate nothing would go wrong during or after the surgery.

The voice was very calming and the exercise was very easy to follow. It had me so relaxed I didn't need as much pain medication before or after.

I very much recomend these relaxation exercises to anyone who is contemplaing surgery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Use The Power of Your Mind, June 24, 2008

This review is from: Preparing for Surgery: Guided Imagery Exercises for Relaxation and Accelerated Healing (Audio CD)
Deep relaxation, combined with guided imagery, can help you prepare and heal before and after surgery.

Dr. Martin Rossman, M.D., begins this CD with an explanation of the benefits of guided imagery. He explains that research shows that those who use guided imagery prior to surgery have better outcomes, faster healing, and even less loss of blood than those who do not use these methods.

In soothing tones, he then presents 3 exercises (about 25 minutes each) that will help you:

1) Prepare for a successful surgery
2) Prepare on the day of surgery
3) Heal well after surgery.

Surgery is stressful on the body and the psyche. This relaxing CD can help you use the power of your mind to visualize healing and a good outcome. And what we can imagine, we can often produce.

5.0 out of 5 stars The pressure of an athlete, November 16, 2010

I recently had surgery and then again 2 weeks later repeat surgery same area. I bought this cd before the first surgery. I only required one pain pill when I got home.. The second surgery required no pain meds at home. The nurses also asked if I was an athlete because my blood pressure was so low. I was very calm going in and coming out of the hospital.

I have been listening to the first part of this CD for some time now in preparation for a large surgery next summer. It is very relaxing, and helps me feel much more in control and calmer. I really like the sections for the day of surgery and for healing after surgery and am looking forward to using those sections at the appropriate time. Easy to use, even for someone who has not used guided imagery before. I hihgly recommend this for anyone planning any kind of surgery no matter how "small" or "routine" it may be.

I found this CD very helpful. His voice is very soothing & his visualization methods worked for me very well. I listened to it for about a week before surgery and plan to share it with any friends or family who will be going through surgery. I am myself, a certified clinical hypnotherapist and thought this CD was extremely helpful & highly recommend it.
