For the reader who owns a small or medium sized business (there are approximately 8 million small business owners in the United States), "Preparing Your Business For Sale" will help get you ready for the inevitable — one day, whether planned or not, your business will be sold. A business transfer to a family member or sale to a stranger or to another company, can be a successful and highly profitable transaction if you understand how to prepare.

What’s more important is that all of this information cannot be found together in any other book. The author’s shows special expertise is in taking highly complex issues like business valuation, estate planning, and succession planning and presenting them to the reader in layperson’s language.

"Preparing Your Business For Sale" introduces many practical strategies on how a business owner can prepare their business to maximize its sales value. It includes an easy to understand but powerful business valuation method, a complete treatment of family-owned business succession planning, a guide to selecting professional advisors who will put the owner’s interest first, and numerous checklists to follow in implementing the various recommendations. Specific topics include:

Why You Need to Prepare Your Business for Sale

What Is Your Business Really Worth?

Enhancing the Sales Value of Your Business

Succession Planning for the Family-Owned Business

Choosing Professional Advisors and Sales Representatives

Resources for Preparing Your Business for Sale

Putting It All Together: Preparing an Exit Plan

In the last chapter, the author takes all of the valuable and detailed information in the preceding chapters and presents a logical and easy-to-follow exit plan for selling and transferring a business so that the business owner can realize the most money from the sale. By focusing on valuing a business as a "going concern" with tight management control, lowering expenses and expanding revenue streams, Mr. Brown demonstrates an iron-clad method for selling a business for the most money. After reading the book, business owners will be able to immediately implement this beneficial approach.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Preparing Your Business For Sale" contains many special features that make the book an extremely valuable resource for its readers:

This is very unique book that shows business owners how to prepare their business for sale for the most money and minimize the difficulties in completing a business transfer of ownership.

It addresses a looming baby-boomer issue: how to sell or transfer the company they have worked so hard to create as retirement age approaches for millions of business owners.

It presents 60 strategic moves and hundreds of tips and recommendations that a business owner should implement or risk losing significant value, or even their company’s entire worth, at the time of the sale.

No other book addresses the issues of preparing a business for the rigors of the business buying and selling market. This is not a book about how to buy or sell a business but rather how to advantageously position a company for sale.

It fulfills the need of a market that includes 850,000 potential small business sellers at any given time in the U.S.

From the Author

I've written "Preparing Your Business For Sale" to be a very easy to understand resource for business owners to quickly and easily determine how to prepare their business for sale for the most money. I’ve used actual experiences from my many years as a business broker to bring life to the concepts business sellers need to know to successfully close a transaction. The hundreds of insider secrets and tips I provide are based on my many years as a business owner, broker, and appraiser, as well as my extensive business education.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic book for sellers of smaller companies, July 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Preparing Your Business for Sale (Paperback)
I found the book to be somewhat basic and most appropriate for sellers of smaller businesses and/or sellers without significant knowledge about financial markets and/or business acquisitions and divestitures. That criticism aside, the book is well written, comprehensive and substantially relevant to today's market. I'm glad I purchased it.

The checklists are great. Also very helpful is the sample language for various aspects of a contract. Helpful for selling with or without a broker.
