Great book for parents with children. Creating memories and just overall planning helps ease the burden of the terminally ill.

Wow! What a tough book! Tough, but also perfect. First, it gives a lot of background on what the patient AND family might be thinking or feeling. I am sure just the first informational half would bring up things to discuss and work through. If that is not how you feel comfortable sharing, then the back section give you hints and tips on things to write, think, and talk about. Some of the silliest topics or stories may come out to mind and be a treasure for anyone that is blessed enough to read it later. It would be impossible to think of all of that on your own, so it is wonderful that Lori Hedderman thought of it for you! Just like the old movie "My Life" where Michael Keaton video tapes his thoughts and feelings for his family or even the more recent Randy Pausch's last lecture- this could be your own personal legacy that helps you AND your loved ones through very difficult times now and in the future. Good luck to you and God bless!

Tough subject handled with dignity.,
This review is from: Preparing Your Children For Goodbye: A Guidebook For Dying Parents (Paperback)
Lori Hedderman's book serves as a sensitive guide and inspiration for a dying parent to use in creating an invaluable document for their children--and family and friends. But perhaps the real value will be felt years later when that child, now an adult, wonders about Mom's pet, if she had a nickname or exactly why she called her beloved first bicycle "Inky." In other words, I believe that once the parent completes the areas of their choice, it becomes more and more precious and valuable with time. While this may be a difficult book to purchase and for the patient to begin making notes in, it seems to me that using this guide to create this unique personal record will be deeply meaningful for the person, validate their life, and give them a sense of "looking after" those they most care about. Lori's skills and background are obvious in the way she handles this tough, tough subject. I really recommend this book and I thank her for her tenacity in creating it. |
