Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Whether you're e-mailing family and friends, balancing your online checkbook, or listening to your digital music collection, Compaq's SR1320NX offers a versatile, strong base for your home computing needs. Focusing on affordability, the SR1320NX has room to grow with the ability to add up to 2 GB of RAM and a wide variety of peripherals via its seven USB 2.0 ports. It's also ready for your multimedia needs, with a dual layer DVD/CD burner and a multiformat memory card reader that's compatible with today's most popular digital camera formats. Other features include an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and a 1.8 GHz AMD Sempron 3100+ processor.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: Offering more than enough room for everyday computing needs and a decent-sized multimedia library, the 80 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) is average compared to other desktop PCs in this range. You can boost your storage space by adding optional external hard drives via the USB 2.0 or Firewire ports.
  • Processor: A lower-end cousin to AMD's XP processor line, the 1.8 GHz AMD Sempron 3100+ found in this desktop is compatible in speed with Intel's 2.9 GHz Celeron processor. It's speedy enough for everyday computing needs and running office productivity software, but won't be quite enough for higher-end video editing or 3D gaming. It also features a 1600 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 256 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
  • Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (PC2700) is adequate for running office productivity and audio software, but you'll want to take advantage of the roomy 2 GB of total RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB) for such multimedia needs as video editing and immersive 3D gaming.
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the SR1320NX multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD+/-RW, 2.4x DVD+R DL, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CDR, 24x CDRW, and 40x CD-ROM ROM speeds.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop PC comes with the Compaq Productivity keyboard and scroller mouse, both of which connect to the PS/2 ports on the back of the machine.
Graphics and Sound
The SR1320NX features audio and video cards that are integrated into the computer's main board. The sound card uses the AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) standard (configurable to 6 channels of audio). The video/graphics card has up to 64 MB of shared video memory. It is suitable for good range of gaming graphics and multimedia video playback, but might not stack up for ultra-realistic 3-D PC games.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, the SR1320NX has two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bay (one available) and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied), three PCI slots (two available), and one AGP slot (available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

  • 7 USB 2.0 ports (3 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 1 serial port for older peripherals such as early PDAs
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 microphone, 1 headphone
  • 1 line-out, and 1 line-in jack
  • 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, and XD Picture Card
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Antivirus 2005 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), Norton Personal Firewall 2004 (60-day security update subscription), Encarta Encyclopedia 2005, Adobe Photoshop Album, Quicken New User Edition 2005, Microsoft Money 2005, RecordNow, WinDVD Player, WinDVD Creator 2.5, iTunes, PC Doctor, and SpySubtract.

Dimensions and Weight
This desktop PC measures 15.35 x 7.17 x 16.54 inches (HxWxD) and weighs 30 pounds.

2.0 out of 5 stars ok for playing music, games not a high power pc at all, May 28, 2005
This review is from: Compaq Presario SR1320NX Desktop PC (AMD Sempron processor 3100+, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I bought this pc to replace an e machines t 3085 that had a damaged motherboard. at first it seemed to be better and i have owned earlier compaqs that i loved. I have since repaired the t3085 and have them running side by side( I broke it to begin with not the fault of the manufacturer.) there is no comparison!!!

the e machines is faster smoother and has no problem burning discs, playing games, and in short doing all of the tasks that you would expect to be able to do.

the compaq features a faster burner but it will fail to burn

a dvd -r 1/3rd of the time while the emachines has yet to fail

once in the same time frame.

prices are similar and compaq does not seem to be the same quality name they once were. i would not buy one again!

4.0 out of 5 stars I owned the compaq presario 3 years ago, December 21, 2008
This review is from: Compaq Presario SR1320NX Desktop PC (AMD Sempron processor 3100+, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I owned this computer three years ago, I replaced the momory RAM and hard drive to make it better. I remember I had the same problem burning dvd's and I went into a research and found that the type of dvd's could be the problem, then I bought dvd's from different brands and worked just fine. Later rarely I had this problem. Also the software can be the problem it happened to me many times. So I would say that the burner is the one that sometimes has problems the rest is fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars good for $350, June 15, 2005

This review is from: Compaq Presario SR1320NX Desktop PC (AMD Sempron processor 3100+, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
[...] The machine is well rounded.
Fairly fast processor, good memory, 7200rpm hard drive, and
built in video on the motherboard. it has one extra DIMM slot
and a AGP slot if you want to add a dedicated graphics board.
the case is well designed with space for another hard drive and
a 5.25" open bay for another CD-drive.

there are a lot of open ports here.. two 6-pin firewire, six
usb 2.0, and slots for all kinds of compact flash cards.

Like the previous reviewer, i am having problems burning dvds with the built in Lite-on dvd burner whereas my second burner
succeeds.
