The challenge of selecting a preschool for your child is exciting, confusing and scary all at once. You probably have several alternatives from which to choose, and you may be getting conflicting advice about each of them. The purpose of this book is to give you the information you need to select the right preschool program for your child. While many good books are already available that help you understand different teaching philosophies, compare full-day and part-day options, explain costs, describe the screening process, and provide overviews of the many choices available, we start with a simple truth that organizes this book and all the suggestions we make: the best preschool teaching practices make the most of children's natural inclination to play. Almost all current research on young children clearly indicates that when children play, they learn - and they learn social, emotional and physical skills as well as academics. Our view that a quality preschool program is one that promotes learning through rich play experiences is based on that research.
