2.0 out of 5 stars Some good advice, but also some bad
This book helped me diagnose my candidiasis about 9 years ago so I'm grateful for that, but now that I'm much more of a critical thinker and more educated I know it has some bad information in it as well.

It promotes homeopathy throughout the book which I'm passionately against. Homeopathy is not supported by scientific evidence and isn't even plausible so...

5.0 out of 5 stars A handy reference, February 13, 2005
This review is from: Prescription for Natural Cures (Paperback)
This user-friendly reference on natural healing and preventative strategies for a variety of ailments is based on the premise that body functioning is optimal when the foods ingested are as close as possible to their natural state. The physician-author believes (and lot of people endorse this view) that non-emergent and chronic ailments should be managed by holistic medical techniques, while using modern medicine as a useful adjunct, and not the other way around.

Each chapter is devoted to a health condition, and it is further subdivided into an overview of the disease, its root causes, symptoms and testing techniques. Treatment is divided into recommended foods and the foods to avoid, detoxification strategies as well as complimentary treatments including homeopathy, accupressure, stress reduction and aroma therapy.

Over 100 health conditions are discussed in this format! These include conditions as diverse as acne, high cholesterol, diarrhea, headache and sinusitis etc. Part II of the book reviews essentials of natural medicine including diet, nutrition, fasting, supplements, exercise etc. This is one thorough book to have around!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for a Family, Excellent Policy for a Nation, August 18, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Prescription for Natural Cures (Paperback)
This is the more recent (2004 versus 2000) and the more comprehensive of two books that I have bought and use, but I do recommend that the other book, Bill Gottlieb's "Alternative Cures" be bought at well.

This book distinguishes itself by routinely including, in addition to clearly laid out natural herbal prescriptions, what the options are that might be effective in Acupressure, Bodywork, Stress Reduction, Bach Flower Remedies, and Other Recommendations.

All informatioon has to be taken with a grain of salt, but I have found that by combining the recommendations from this book with those of Bill Gottlieb, I get a better over-all sense of where there is consensus, and I get a clearer picture of what natural cures to select from the broad range that both books recommend in different ways.

This is the better of the two books, but it is not sufficient to stand alone. The two together provide a superior meld of knowledge tailored to each individual reader's needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, March 9, 2005
This review is from: Prescription for Natural Cures (Paperback)
It's no surprise that with the increasing costs of traditional medicine (not to mention the invasive nature of some treatments and the alarming side effects of most prescription drugs) many are turning to natural or alternative remedies. Balch and Stengler provide a great source of information on everything from herbs and other supplements to accupuncture and bodywork. For each condition listed in the book, the authors offer 7 super prescriptions (7 supplements). I've been using the remedies for lower back pain and I've found them very helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!, May 18, 2006

This is a book you will use. this is a book you will want your doctor to read, preferably own. It will take the person who is not familiar w/ many alternative care methods and supplements and "baby step" you you through them w/out dumbing anything down or being tedious.
it is a wealth of good , easily referenced information
for those who are already well versed in alternative medicine..many chiropractor friends have this to refer to in order to best serve
their patients... it is top notch and once again EASY to read and understand.

I use it regularly and would not part w/ it !!!

I am a long-time admirer of Dr. Balch who relies on natural therapies and preventative remedies to avoid surgery or to stop using pharmaceutical medications, adding conventional treatment if needed depending on the severity and the response of the patient. This latest reference book (724 pages) is also presented in an easy-to-understand, knowledgeable, informative way revealing many alternative means to resolve the various human conditions which if followed result in a real blessing. A great book for an informed approach to healthful living.

I love this book! I refer to it all the time. Given that we are in the HMO and PPO age it helps to go to your doctor's office with a little knowledge of what could possible be wrong and different treatment options. I would much rather take the more natural approach to self care than relying on allopathic medication for everything.

I bought each of my grown children a copy of this book for Christmas; they love it. It has already become an invaluable self-help tool for them. And for me too since they have no health insurance. Easy to understand, remedies that are easily accessible, and very informative.
now i need to buy myself a copy...

5.0 out of 5 stars Extensive and Very Informative, December 28, 2005
This review is from: Prescription for Natural Cures (Paperback)
I found this book to be such a great reference for natural cures for diseases. Although some methods are not presented in the book (e.g.: hydrogen peroxide therapy, magnet therapy, etc.), it is still extremely extensive and very well written. If you have ANY ailment, a solution can be found in this book. I found this book to be very well used in conjunction with the book "Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements". Additionally, the MD and ND that wrote the natural cures book explain, scientifically and logically, each disease and each method to cure it. A great read for anyone who wants to cure themselves of any disease.

5.0 out of 5 stars Natural Cures works, February 26, 2006

(REAL NAME)
I have been involved with the study of herbs and vitamins for almost 30 years, and I can confirm that a lot of the solutions in Dr. Balch's book will work for physical problems such as poor circulation, sex improvement, sinus problems, arthritis, asthma, gout, fungus problems, liver regeneration, and other diseases. The author gives several supplement solutions for each problem, and you may not be able to find some of this information anywhere else. The book is arranged in alphabetical order according to the disease name, and there is a helpful listing of herbs and their benefits in the back of the book. The book is over 700 pages long, and you'll be glad you bought it!
