Book Description

September 23, 1998
Some time ago, Bernie Siegel received the following note from the family of someone who died of cancer: "If you ever do go back into active medical practice, you should redo your Rx pads to say: Prescriptions for LivingFaith, Hope, Peace, LoveReceive and give liberal doses dailyfor the rest of your life."

A pioneer in the field of mind-body medicine, Bernie Siegel has led the way in demonstrating how peace of mind, a sense of meaning in one's life, and the willingness to give and receive unconditional love can influence one's ability to survive even the most serious of illnesses. As a surgeon, he learned about survival behavior from his patients and realized they were teaching him the wisdom of the sages. Now Bernie, as he prefers to be called, updates this wisdom for all of us. He embraces a wider audience of those facing ordinary challenges and offers a compass for navigating a course of happiness and fulfillment.

"Prescriptions for Living" is, in a sense, a storybook, because stories are truer than the truth and easier to understand. It is filled with parables, reflections, and personal anecdotes that illuminate the beauty, magic, and truth in our everyday lives. By helping us to change our attitudes toward our daily lives, Bernie reveals the hope and joy that is everywhere if we know where to look and how to see it. Among the life lessons he shares are how to forgive and love ourselves and others and how to learn from the wisdom of children. With compassion, warmth, humor, and insight, Bernie helps us to find our true selves and manifest our potential, as well as understand life's requirements and how to fulfill them. As Bernie says, "Batteries are not included." He canonly guide, direct, and coach you, but he knows from experience with his patients the talent within each of us and our capabilities. By filling his prescriptions and experiencing the wisdom of the lessons, your life can be changed.

From Booklist

"If I sent this book to myself for a comment . . . I'd write, `It's already been written. Nothing new.'" What Siegel means by that seemingly self-deprecating review is that all good spiritual advice is necessarily a rehash of what the great masters of the past have said. Well, yes . . . but this particular book is a retread in the more prosaic sense as well: there really is nothing new here. Siegel draws readily from his own previous works, Love, Medicine and Miracles (1986) and Peace, Love and Healing (1988), as well as the works of others with the same positive messages about living life and working through adversities. Same old same old, to be sure, but Siegel is a well-loved brand name, and his collection of anecdotes, stories, and supportive advice does have its amusing moments. Among the topics Siegel covers are how to find peace of mind; how to love, encourage, and forgive other people as well as yourself; and how to thrive in bad times and survive the good times. For those ready to be uplifted by the soothing repetition of time-tested homilies, Siegel delivers the goods. Ilene Cooper --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for one searching for a meaningful life., December 8, 1998
By A Customer
This book helps us to focus on what is important in life. If we are troubled by sickness, poor temperment or just the blahs of living from day to day struggling to find what our lives are all about, this book highlights methods of overcoming the spiritual doldrums of existence. Bernie gives of himself in this book by showing how he turns inward and focuses on the negatives of his temperment to irradicate those faults and become a more loving and giving person. His theory embodies thought from a variety of spritual sources although he primarily quotes themes from the Bible and Christian theology. I was encouraged by this book to quit living as though I had all the time in the world but rather to live with a thoughts of how temporary this life really is. Bernie encourages us to live our lives as if we knew and realized that we only have a short time to be here. I am inspired to quit living for the drugery of a job and persuit of material goods and to live a life that is centered on giving, creating, and sharing my God given talent with others.
