Presenting widely varying opinions on provocative topics, The Presence of Others invites every student to enter a dialogue with the readings and with accompanying commentaries from the editors, student writers, and experts in other disciplines and fields. Noted scholars Andrea A. Lunsford and John J. Ruszkiewicz -- whose takes on political and academic culture differ markedly -- have selected a range of visual and written texts that cover issues of importance in academic and public life, from education to ethics, science and technology to American cultural myths. With its diverse selection of ideas, The Presence of Others encourages students to respond thoughtfully to arguments and to move toward excellence in articulating and supporting their own positions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I appreciate the way the readings are in conversation with each other -- even the ones that are not a specific pro-con debate. Students can see links and ties across disciplines and boundaries.

The Presence of Others : Voices and Images That Call for Response
by Andrea A. Lunsford (Editor), John J. Ruszkiewicz was use in my freshman English course. In the beginning I was not too enthusiastic about the book. It took some time to get used to. Now it has become part of my growing home library. It has great essays ranging from John Henry Newman to Bell Hooks. I love the diversity.Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz did a great job putting this book together. There are subjects that everyone can relate to. Since using the book in my English class I have become a both critical reader and thinker that John Henry Newman had a vision of.
