Very Thought-provoking Study, August 4, 2010
This review is from: Presence And Work Of The Holy Spirit (Paperback)
In 25 mostly short chapters, Torrey uses an abundance of Biblical references to explain who the Holy Spirit is and what he does. Beginning with core ideas like the personality and deity of the Holy Spirit, he goes on to the many things that the Bible states the Holy Spirit actually does. In one of the longest chapters of the book, Torrey traces the many different names that the Bible uses to refer to the Holy Spirit and some of the implications of these names.
Most of the book is directed toward the work of the Holy Spirit in convicting, regenerating, guiding and teaching. However, many other aspects of His work are also addressed including forming Christ-like character in the believer.
Torrey gives significant coverage to the baptism with the Holy Spirit. The Bible uses a number of different verbs to explain the coming of the Holy Spirit including: pour out, fill with, baptize with, come on, clothe with, and receive. Some of these verbs seem to be used interchangeably, but not all of them. Torrey concludes receiving the Holy Spirit is something definite we will be aware of based on the questions that the apostles asked several groups of new believers. He also believes the baptism or filling of the Holy Spirit (his preferred term is baptism) is something separate that needs to be deliberately pursued. Torrey makes a strong case for praying for the filling of the Holy Spirit on a regular basis.
In a very important chapter, Torrey addresses Obtaining the Baptism with the Holy Spirit. Here he sets forth definite steps to be taken. His summary of these steps is given on page 226: "Anyone who will accept Jesus as his Savior and his Lord, put away all sin out of his life, publicly confess his renunciation of sin and acceptance of Jesus Christ, surrender absolutely to God, ask God for the baptism with the Holy Spirit, and take it by simple faith in the naked Word of God, can receive the baptism with the Holy Spirit right now."
The final two chapters address the work of the Holy Spirit in prophets and apostles and in the life of Jesus Christ himself.
R. A. Torrey has been gone for a number of years, but his legacy lives on. This is a very thought-provoking study, which is highly recommended for your consideration. Since the Christian life is only possible through the ministry of the in-dwelling Holy Spirit, our understanding of this topic is of critical importance.

This review is from: Presence And Work Of The Holy Spirit (Paperback)
This is another excellent book by Dr. R.A. Torrey. I think it is the best of all of his books. His subject matter is very appropriate for this day and is also timeless. There are few books that I'll recommend, but this is one of them. I highly recommend The Presence and Work of the Holy Spirit by Dr. R.A. Torrey.
