5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Album From A Band Faded Away, March 20, 2010

This review is from: Present Age (Audio CD)
In Praise Of Folly were not your typical indie band, and it's pretty obvious with a band name like that. These guys made lush and layered complex tunes that I do beleive have been compared to the likes of Modest Mouse and Built To Spill. But silly comparisons aside (no disrespect to either MM or BTS, 2 of my fave bands), they were so much more than knock offs. Right from the first track "I Used To Care" where the lead singer echoes "And I am so excited" in such a detached way, you can already tell this is going to be a great CD. The guitars twinkle and gleam their own little notes and noises, creating quite an ambient atmosphere in front of the haunting, whisphery vocals and the slow, constant drumming. Things do pick up at times, but this is mostly a meandering, wandering album aimed at the journey, not the destination. A truly unique band, and unfortunately they kind of lost their magic on their second album, and then their eventual disbanding. Luckily, this debut is so elegant that it proves to be, at least to me, a forever glorification of their brief existence. New bands have come and gone on Lujo Records (including the sensational Look Mexico), but thse guys were truly something special. I'd say I'm shocked that no one else has reviewed, but in no way am I. This is a very obscure album by a more obscure band. Pandora Radio introduced me to them with "Sometimes The Best Connection Is No Connection At All". A great track mingled in with more great music. I praise In Praise Of Folly for making such a killer indie album. You guys are missed!
