Saw this on a review for the pink version of this same clock..."Although you cannot set a nighttime and daytime setting, you can silence the Cuckoo completely by taking the middle of the 3 batteries out. The clock will still run, but the Cuckoo is silenced."

Thank god!

Otherwise, LOVE the look of the chrome :)

I bought this item, well the yellow version the other day, and even though amazon says the bird doesn't pop out, mine does! And it cuckoos loud. I don't know if mine was just missing it, or if none of them come with instructions but that was annoying. First it calls for L14 batteries, uhhh... finally figured out they meant C batteries. Then it took me a few minutes to figure out how to attach the tail/metronome. Still trying to figure out if this weird unmarked very hard to turn button has anything to do with the volume... Somewhere else I read it only cuckoos between 6am and 9pm...ugh can I change this? I work nights so rarely go to bed before 4. Oh well, I do adore it. It's so cute and goes great with my insane decor.

It has the most annoying cuckoo sound ever. It's like there are 500 turkeys gobbling in your living room. I wish there was a volume adjustment.

What I know about the sound mechanism & buttons/knob on the back: The black knob at top left (kind of looks like a fat button) turns to adjust volume.
Follow these instructions (preferably in the a.m. as close to 5 a.m.) from http://blog.germanclocks.org/2010/05/set-your-quartz-cuckoo-with-automatic.html:
"BEFORE INSTALLING THE BATTERIES
1. Turn the minute hand clockwise until it points to 5:00am
2. Open the back cover and insert 3 batteries in the battery holder (for best results, use Duracell or a generic brand - any brand OTHER than Energizer.)
3. From 6:00am to 9:00pm, the cuckoo will call the full hour on the hour. From 10:00pm to 5:00am the night shut-off should be in effect and the cuckoo will not call."
When adjusting the time forward, you must allow the cuckoo to call out each hour in full before continuing to move the hands through to the next hour.
One of the buttons (I can't remember which... you'll have to experiment) you press one time to have it cuckoo at daytime only, another time all day/night, another time for off all the time.

This clock is adorable to look at, but impossible to live with. There is no instruction manual, and the cuckoo noise is the MOST annoying sound. It sounds like a gaggle of geese being strangled. There is a volume knob on the back (upper left) but even at the lowest volume it is still too loud, especially because it was to go in my daughter's room, and it would wake her up every hour on the hour if i put it in there. There is a button on the back to stop the cuckoo sound while it's going off, but there's no way to program it to only go off during the day. I was really excited about this clock, but it's definitely going back.
