About the Author

Jerry Weissman is the world’s number one corporate presentations coach. His private client list reads like a who’s who of the world’s best companies, including the top brass at Cisco Systems, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Intel, Intuit, Netflix, Dolby Labs and many others. Mr. Weissman founded Power Presentations, Ltd. in 1988. One of his earliest efforts was the Cisco Systems IPO road show. Following its successful launch, Don Valentine, of Sequoia Capital, and then chairman of Cisco’s Board of Directors, attributed “at least two to three dollars” of the offering price to Mr. Weissman’s coaching. That endorsement led to more than 500 other IPO road show presentations that have raised hundreds of billions of dollars in the stock market.

With this new volume, veteran presentation coach Jerry Weissman has both summarized and updated the advice he offered in his three previous books: Presenting to Win: The Art of Telling Your Story, Updated and Expanded Edition, The Power Presenter: Technique, Style, and Strategy from America's Top Speaking Coach, and In the Line of Fire: How to Handle Tough Questions...When It Counts. Here, 80 vignettes give us ideas about how to be better presenters: really, to be more successful performers and speakers. The one- or two-page examples include real-life tales from celebrities, politicians, athletes, and business folk. A few appearances by President Obama serve to further update the approach. These are stories about what to do and what *not* to do when you're speaking in front of a group. We can learn from both.

As we scan through the pages, we come across Weissman's mantras, repeated here and there for emphasis. "Make it hard for your audience, and they will make it hard for you," he says, more than once. He explains the best ways to begin speaking, and the optimum placements and postures for standing or sitting. He shows us the benefits of pausing. He also suggests conducting your speech as a person-to-person conversation. Many PowerPoint users need to understand the differences between a graphics presentation and a document or handout. The slides should *supplement* your remarks, not mirror or replace them. Otherwise, why are you there?

"Presentations In Action: 80 Memorable Presentation Lessons From The Masters" by Jerry Weissman is a book full of practical advice and tips to make presentations more effective, regardless of what or why you are presenting. Weissman, author of the bestselling "Presenting to Win" collected 80 lessons, from various master speakers, and organized them under the topics outlined in his earlier books. The first two sections, Content: The Art of Telling Your Story and Graphics: The Correct Way to Design PowerPoint Slides compliment his first book "Presenting to Win." The third section, Delivery Skills: Actions Speak Louder Than Words, relates to the lessons taught in "The Power Presenter." Section four, Q&A: Handling Tough Questions, covers some the topics Weissman wrote about in his book, "In The Line of Fire." Section five, Integration: Putting it All Together, compliments the lessons in all of the books and the first part of this one. However, you do not have to read all of those earlier books to benefit from this one. This book, and the lessons it contains, stands on its own as a good book to help a person make their presentations more effective.

The 80 lessons in this book are case studies of people who actually speak, and each one is one to three pages long. Most are two pages. The lessons are simple, but that does not mean they are not very important. The speaker who practices and incorporates all of the tips from this book will undoubtedly increase the effectiveness of their presentations.

Some of the speakers Weissman looks at for lessons include Andrew Weil, M.D., Steve Jobs, President Reagan, Frank Sinatra, President Obama, and many more.

Professional presenter, and author, Jerry Weissman has written this book to bring together all the major points from three of his previous books: Presenting to Win: The Art of Telling Your Story, Updated and Expanded Edition, The Power Presenter: Technique, Style, and Strategy from America's Top Speaking Coach, and In the Line of Fire: How to Handle Tough Questions...When It Counts. Mr. Weissman states in the Introduction, "This book consists of 80 new case studies from the front of the room. They are grouped into five sections mapped to the three original books, where you can find the basic techniques in full: Section I - Content: The Art of Telling Your Story, Section II - Graphics: The Correct Way to Design Power-Point Slides, Section III - Delivery Skills: Actions Speak Louder than Words, Section IV - Q & A: How to Handle Tough Questions, and Section V - Integration: Putting it All Together. The first two sections relate to Presenting to Win, the third section, The Power Presenter, the fourth, In the Line of Fire, and the fifth incorporates all three books."

Now, I have not read the three previous books, but I didn't find that hindered my ability to grasp the material at all. True to his craft, Mr. Weissman presents the ideas in this book in a fluid, concise, and easy to follow fashion. All of the concepts are simple to utilize. Take this quote for example, "Redirection, relaxation, and visualization adapted to presentations will help control the butterflies.
