Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up-- Since Gallo's style is not as appealing, witty or insightful as Richard Peck's, this book will hold the most appeal for adults who work with young adults rather than young adults themselves. Rather than presenting Peck as a private person, the portrait painted here is of Peck as author, with the focus on his books. The wit and humor conveyed when Peck is quoted add a lively touch. Many of Peck's comments show that he not only knows teens and cares about them, but is also concerned about and disturbed by much in the current teen scene. Information about honors and prizes, film adaptions, and an extensive bibliography which cites reviews add reference value to the volume. However, in spite of being well researched and well written, the book will be useful only in libraries that have a need for material beyond standard reference works. Lacking the anecdotal and personal trivia that could make Richard Peck vivid to readers, this book functions as a summarization and critique of his contribution to young adult literature. --Carol A. Edwards, East Central Regional Library, Cambridge, MN
