Editorial Reviews

As one of the early supporters of drum & bass in America, Brit ex-pat DJ-producer DB has long promoted stateside D&B. His newest mix CD, The Higher Education Drum 'N' Bass Session, continues this tradition with tracks from up and coming U.S. producers standing shoulder to shoulder with established U.K. artists. Opening with Kazimir's "Memories," a dreamy sci-fi tale featuring Carol C, DB carves a moody pathway with rough, abstract breaks from L.A.'s Pieter K, noisy anarchy from San Francisco's Phunckateck crew, and remixes of U.S. tracks from Konflict, Rob Playford, and Dom & Roland. Though DB's mixing is sometimes inconsistent, his track selection is a refreshing change of pace from the usual drone and bass that populates many dance floors. --Tricia Romano

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't sit still to this CD!, August 30, 2000

This review is from: DJ DB Presents The Higher Education Drum & Bass Session (Audio CD)
As a longtime fan of drum and bass, I usually find mix CD's to be disappointing and a waste of money. However, they seem to be getting better, especially with DJ Dara's "From Here to There" , Dieselboy's "System Upgrade", and now, DJ DB's "Higher Education...." Quite simply, it is impossible to stand still and listen to this CD. It just plain inspires one to break it down and shake one's a**. The CD starts out mellow with Kazimir's "Memories", but then kicks in a faster bass line on the second track "Pendulum". From then on, DB journeys through very fast rolling bass, breakbeats, and some very nice tech-step beats towards the end of the CD, such as with "The Message" and "116.7". The CD ends on the mellow note it started with, including a remix of "Memories", giving the listener a chance to settle down after the previous few tracks. For new fans of drum and bass, this CD will give you a nice sample of several different styles in the genre, allowing you to choose which ones you like the most. For longtime fans of the genre, it is a fantastic addition to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars DB kickin ass again, July 27, 2000

i just got this cd about a week ago and have made it a point to give it a full-length listening at least once a day. i could have told you after the first listen to go buy it if you even remotely like drum and bass. for the purist, let me break this cd down. being very familiar with his last cd, "shades of technology", you can definitely hear DB's formula put to work here, starting the cd off with kazimar's dreamy mood-setting "memories". moving throught the cd, the tracks shuffle from a little trancy drum and bass to alot of tech-step, especially toward the latter half of the cd. highlights for me included soul coughing's "rolling", karl k's "synapse", GFS' "the metal track", and acen's "116.7". like all the greats (ak1200, deiselboy, aphrodite, etc.)DB has his own style of breaks that captivates and motivates the listener and above all, accomplishes its no.1 goal...making you want to get up and dance. buy this cd...props to all d'n'b lovers.
