5.0 out of 5 stars Can't sit still to this CD!
As a longtime fan of drum and bass, I usually find mix CD's to be disappointing and a waste of money. However, they seem to be getting better, especially with DJ Dara's "From Here to There" , Dieselboy's "System Upgrade", and now, DJ DB's "Higher Education...." Quite simply, it is impossible to stand still and listen to this CD. It just...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice listen will be rocked in my car for at least 3 weeks
Been a while since ive purchased a dnb mixed cd, with friends keeping me afloat in tapes, i picked this one up the other night, and i must say that STILL enjoy DB, some of the mixes in here are dubious at best (especially the way he goes into tough at the top...) BUT the track selection on this compilation MORE then makes up for the questionable mixing i heard on...

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't sit still to this CD!, August 30, 2000

This review is from: DJ DB Presents The Higher Education Drum & Bass Session (Audio CD)
It just plain inspires one to break it down and shake one's a**. The CD starts out mellow with Kazimir's "Memories", but then kicks in a faster bass line on the second track "Pendulum". From then on, DB journeys through very fast rolling bass, breakbeats, and some very nice tech-step beats towards the end of the CD, such as with "The Message" and "116.7". The CD ends on the mellow note it started with, including a remix of "Memories", giving the listener a chance to settle down after the previous few tracks. For new fans of drum and bass, this CD will give you a nice sample of several different styles in the genre, allowing you to choose which ones you like the most. For longtime fans of the genre, it is a fantastic addition to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars DB kickin ass again, July 27, 2000

This review is from: DJ DB Presents The Higher Education Drum & Bass Session (Audio CD)
i just got this cd about a week ago and have made it a point to give it a full-length listening at least once a day. i could have told you after the first listen to go buy it if you even remotely like drum and bass. for the purist, let me break this cd down. being very familiar with his last cd, "shades of technology", you can definitely hear DB's formula put to work here, starting the cd off with kazimar's dreamy mood-setting "memories". moving throught the cd, the tracks shuffle from a little trancy drum and bass to alot of tech-step, especially toward the latter half of the cd. highlights for me included soul coughing's "rolling", karl k's "synapse", GFS' "the metal track", and acen's "116.7". like all the greats (ak1200, deiselboy, aphrodite, etc.)DB has his own style of breaks that captivates and motivates the listener and above all, accomplishes its no.1 goal...making you want to get up and dance. buy this cd...props to all d'n'b lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars listening to it now for first time..., March 29, 2001
This review is from: DJ DB Presents The Higher Education Drum & Bass Session (Audio CD)
DJ DB is my personal drum 'n' bass savior. I enjoy his mixes more than any other d'n'b I have encountered, and I own From Here to There, Logical Progression, System Upgrade, Aphrodite and others, not to mention my mp3 collection. His sound is a great balance between the aggresivity of Dieselboy and the melodic nature of, maybe, LTJ Bukem. Listening to this new album right now, I simply don't see the problem regarding his mixing skills, they seem top rate, although it is readily apparent that he has a different style than Dieselboy or Dara. But let the man have his steez, he's awesome in his own right

4.0 out of 5 stars This ain't no Shades of Technology, January 21, 2004
By
This review is from: DJ DB Presents The Higher Education Drum & Bass Session (Audio CD)
I've long been a fan of DB's "Shades of Technology." In fact I even bought a copy to replace my burned copy. I decided to check out this one as well, and well, I have mixed feelings. There are some really cool tracks, like the first one, but it seems like this cd slips into a "deiselboyesque" style for the majority. Maybe DB is trying to win back the "hardcore d'n'b fans" with this album, which is chock full of super hype d'n'b (which isn't quite my fav) that's kind of repetitive. This is QUITE a departure from the "ambient jungle" and even the harder tracks that I loved in Shades of Technology. To be honest I'm really starting to like these more hype tracks. They're definetely growing on me... which is why I increased the rating. Just don't expect shades of tech. when you buy this one.

This cd just plain kicks. The energy is undeniable. If you like high energy D&B with some decent vocal trax pick this up. As well as Shades of Technology. This is probably my favorite Jungle/D&B cd to date. Keep it Movin' ;}-

4.0 out of 5 stars as CDs of mixed jungle/drum&bass go, this is pretty good, June 29, 2000

I own DB's Shades of Technology and after listening to this one, I'm starting to catch his drift. There's a nice ratio of vocal tracks to abstract techstep. I'd recommend this for those with a taste for the sounds of techstep. Abstract's "The Message" is a killer!

4.0 out of 5 stars good cd; with many solid grooves, October 21, 2001
This review is from: DJ DB Presents The Higher Education Drum & Bass Session (Audio CD)
if you're like me, than you don't like too much vocalization when a dj is laying down a good beat. there's a few tracks on this cd (1, 16, and 18) that i have to skip, but the rest is pretty awesome maximalist d'n'b. if there was no chick singing on 3 of the tracks, i would have given this a five-star rating.
