Product Description
Written by one of today's great jazz educators, this is a system for building great-sounding jazz lines. the relationship of the individual lines to chords and progressions is analyzed. In addition, original saxophone studies integrate these concepts with technical proficiency.

About the Author
Arnie Berle is a seasoned jazz educator with numerous books to his credit. He toured for years as a reed and flute player with many of the leading big bands in the country. Later, upon settling in his home town of New York, he became very active as a freelance musician and teacher. In 1964, with the arrival of the Beatles, Arnie decided to study the guitar. His experience with other instruments, including accordion and vibraphone, gave him a much broader musical perspective of the guitar. In 1975, he began writing interviews and articles for Guitar Player Magazine, culminating in his very popular column "Fretboard Basics." He is currently a full-time professor at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York, and writes a regular column for Just Jazz Guitar Magazine. His name is cited in the International Who's Who in Music.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent phrase book., July 18, 2002
By KiwiSam "kiwisam" (California United States) - See all my reviews
The exercise in this book are commonly heard phrases that can be played over standard chord sequences. As practice material they are great and the explanations are simple and enlightening. This is a good book for developing dexterity and a feel for the keys and scales. Improvising is much more than repeated practiced licks but working through this book will give a player some chops to fall back on as well as a wider understaning of what is possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for all musicians, October 7, 2005
By Baz (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
All of Arnie Berle's books present the info in a clear, concise and logical way. I recommend you get your hands on as many of them as you can, while you can, especially if you're learning on your own. Any aspiring jazz musician can't have too many pattern books, and this one is a gem. 'Improvisation For The Contemporary Musician' and 'Encyclopedia of Scales, Modes and Melodic Patterns' also by Arnie are also highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Kinds of Licks in this Book, August 30, 2007
By E. Collier (Pittsburgh, PA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a great book to get ideas for Jazz licks. Excellent, not just for the saxophone, but other instruments in the same register can benefit from the instruction in this book. For me, coming from a classical music background, I'm using it with my violin to learn Jazz Violin and improvisation skills. This is quite a challenge, to say the least! These licks are very easy to learn, and not ridiculously difficult, which is what beginners to Jazz music really need.

I really like the book and always have it on my music stand.
