Great information!,
By KellyW (CA, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Preserving The Glory Days: Ghost Towns And Mining Camps Of Nye County, Nevada (Paperback)
This book has wonderful information about Nye County's ghost towns - exactly what I was looking for. Shawn Hall has selected great accompanying photographs, which I found very helpful for a project I am working on. I hope to visit some of the towns mentioned one day (when I find the time!), and this book will definately be of help. The book is devided into region of the county (South, East, etc), and then arranged in alphabetical order, with directions and an historial account of each town. Well written and researched, with great photos!

Most Comprensive Book on Nye County Ghost Towns,
This review is from: Preserving The Glory Days: Ghost Towns And Mining Camps Of Nye County, Nevada (Paperback)
Nye County, Nevada, is one of the largest counties in all of the United States. It stretches from the southern part of the state near Las Vegas to well into Nevada's northern half. Within this vast area, there are dozens ghost towns, most of which sprang up near gold and silver mines. This book is, by far, the most comprehensive work available on the ghost towns of the county.Hall has written books about the ghost towns of other Nevada counties, but he chose Nye county for his first book and with good reason. No other region approaches it, both in numbers of sites and interesting stories. Some of the now abandoned towns of Nye County once approached populations of 10,000. Hall began exploring Nye County ghost towns as a college student, and visited all of the places listed here (excepting the ones located in "off-limits" government areas) prior to writing the book. He is the preeminent expert today on Nevada ghost towns. This book contains histories for each place, directions on how to get to each one, and a wealth of interesting stories about Nevada in mid-19th to early 20th centuries. I found the first edition of this book 30 years ago, and have returned to it often since. It, along with Hall's other works, is highly recommended.
