Struggling to find substance in the man?,

This review is from: The Presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes (Contributions in American Studies) (Hardcover)
Like several of the Gilded Age presidents, Hayes offered few impactful milestones of his presidency, and the author struggles mightily to enumerate same. There is notable coverage of the ascerbic removal of C. A. Arthur from the NY Customs House patronage position, an attempt by Hayes to reform the political corruptions af the Republicans of the time. Relatively minor forays into foreign policy are lightly covered, as are the brushstrokes of reconstruction policy by the Hayes administration. It is apparent that the author wrestled with defining the Hayes legacy, as he posits that the forces of the time (Industrial Age growth, immigration waves, political influence-peddling and white South re-emergence) simply oveerwhelmed the executive office. Sad that even a dedicated historian can find so little substance in the muddled Hayes.
